Emporia maintains that capitalism, when done right, can have a positive impact on society. Emporia believes it can truly make the world a better place. It strives to understand the impact of energy use, where it comes from, and what it costs; and wants to help everyone understand it too.

Emporia’s goal is to save customers money by making homes more energy-efficient through its Smart Home Energy Management technology.

The Good

  • Emporia App
  • Charge with Excess Solar
  • Reasonably Priced

Emporia App

The Emporia App tracks energy use and collects live data from its EV charger to help you manage your usage and schedule efficient charging times. Emporia offers many products that connect to make up their Smart Home Energy Management system. The EV charger is just a small piece of that puzzle, and the app comes in handy when you are using all the components to stream energy usage from solar panels to your EV charger.

Charge with Excess Solar

Combining the Emporia EV Charger with an Emporia Vue Smart Home Energy Monitor and solar panels ensures you're only charging your EV when your solar system is generating more electricity than you are using in your home. This is a bit complicated for someone just wanting to buy an EV charger, but for the customer who wants to invest in a home system to become energy self-sufficient, Emporia may be a good product choice.

Reasonably Priced

Emporia’s EV charger is very reasonably priced. Emporia’s EV charger qualifies for the 30 percent federal tax credit (up to $1,000) for equipment and installation. There is also a possibility of local incentives in your area as well.

The Bad

  • Short NEMA Plug Cord
  • Not UL Certified

Short NEMA Plug Cord

Many consumer reviews claim the Emporia’s NEMA 14-50 plug cord which connects the charging station to the house is too short. Many customers need to buy the extra extension which is an add-on.

Not UL Certified

While Emporia’s EV Charger is not UL certified, it is manufactured to meet the safety criteria defined by other international standards. We recommend buying an EV charger that is UL certified. UL certified indicates that the charger was independently tested for safety by an organization such as Underwriters Laboratory.

The Bottom Line

The Emporia EV Charging Station is American made, has great reviews, and is much more affordable than comparable units with the same features. It has a three-year warranty and Emporia has a great reputation for customer service. The only thing that would make us hesitate on the purchase of an Emporia EV charger is the lack of UL certification.
