PrestaShop was originally a student project that started in 2005 at an IT School in Paris, France. The software came from humble beginnings and only operated in English and French when it was first launched. PrestaShop saw real grown from 2010-2012 and continued to expand upon its global efforts. In addition to providing shopping cart services, the company also launched PrestaShop cloud in 2015 which is also free or charge.

There are over 250,000 e-commerce sites that currently run on PrestaShop. They make roughly make 9 percent of the shopping cart industry with their vast reach. Their continuous growth and expansion into new tools and services has helped create a platform business owners are confident in and easy to use.

The PrestaShop e-commerce service does not require a set-up fee or monthly payment to run. That means store owners can get their shop up and running without having to take on the financial burden associated with launching an online store.

Since there are no “package levels” based on monthly price, each store owner who launches on PrestaShop receives the same features and benefits of service. These benefits include:

While PrestaShop is considered relatively new to the shopping cart and cloud hosting industry, they have made great strides and proven to provide a quality service. Their domain authority rivals some of their biggest competitors which can help business owners with store exposure.

The Bad

Since PrestaShop is a “free” service, there are some limitations. First of all, the maximum storage capacity is 1 GB. While this may be sufficient for some store owners, this will hardly be enough space for those who wish to host a large e-commerce shop. There are add-ons available, but the standard storage capacity is limited.

In addition to placing limits on storage, there are also limits in relation to product listings. Each store can list a maximum of 250 products under the same store platform. Again, this may be more than enough for some, but when it comes to pricing and colors for other store owners, these restrictions can create problems.

Lastly, there have been concerns surrounding security levels on stores hosted by PrestaShop. Since there are transactions taking place and financial information being exchanged, this can be a concern for those who are looking to avoid security-related issues.
