Spotify is holding its ground in the streaming music arena, a hot sector of e-commerce. It became popular because it allows users to pick any song they want to hear and just stream it , no strings attached, except for ads…and except that you can’t do it on your mobile device unless you pay a monthly fee. Anyway, the model has been successful but competitors’ improvements are forcing Spotify to add features.  Thus, we now have lyrics and viral charts available to us.

The idea is to give users a highly social experience and to offer plenty that’s worth sharing. You’ll be able to see what people are sharing most by looking at the viral chart of any country where Spotify is available. Then you can share lyrics or sing along with friends using the lyrics feature. Yes, it’s true. It appears as though the lyrics feature will serve as a Karoake machine in the form of a window on your PC! (Try this solution for a complete setup.)

Musixmatch is the service that provides lyrics via Spotify. It has offered Spotify support before, with its apps, but now lyrics will be available in the main Spotify client. Just click the lyrics button in the bottom-right area of the interface, according to a Spotify promotional video. A really cool feature that comes along with it is that you can search for the lyrics of a song in order to find a track. Let’s say you don’t know the title of the classic Red Hot Chili Peppers song “Soul to Squeeze”. However, you know the first five words of the lyrics, “I got a bad disease”.  Just enter that into the search box and you should be able to find the track. That’s not bad for all of us music nerds! You can also add lyrics if they aren’t yet available.

There is one catch. Spotify recently began showing video ads. Since users will now be reading lyrics with the Spotify window open, they’ll be much more vulnerable to video ad attacks! It’s going to be tough to resist the $9.99/month fee, that prevents ads from showing, if you’re a karaoke fan.
