Retailers Vie for Your Business by Offering Same-Day Delivery

If current events tell us anything about the retail industry, it’s that retailers think we want stuff shipped to us really fast. In the midst of Amazon’s quest to get packages to you in under an hour, Nordstrom, Wal-Mart, Google and Macy’s are all casting their lures in hopes we’ll bite. What’s the bait? It’s same-day delivery.

Google Express costs $10 a month or $95 a year and gives you same-day delivery from Target, Costco, Walgreens and others, according to Time. There are some niche shops in the mix, like Guitar Center and Adorama. Plus, their little parachute logo is undeniably youthful and adorable. Google Express is only available in 8 markets right now, though.

Macy’s partnered with Deliv last fall to offer same-day delivery for a $15 fee. If you need a delivery to Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New Jersey, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle or Washington, D.C., you’re eligible.

Walmart’s testing an idea that aims to compete with Amazon Prime and doesn’t have a name yet. Target’s trying to compete by setting the lowest minimum for free shipping, a mere $25. It’s also going to start a curbside pickup service, as Nordstrom plans to do. That’s something Amazon can’t do without stores across the nation. However, in the more distant future, drone delivery could outdo even curbside pickup in terms of speed.

Amazon, meanwhile, won’t be forgotten as competitors reveal their firepower in the delivery speed arena. Everything is the same at Amazon, except one thing. Prime Members receive same-day delivery for free. Of course you have to be in a major market like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Order by noon and you should receive your goods by 9pm. That used to carry a $5.99 fee for Prime members. Non-prime Amazon users still pay around $10 for it. Look for same-day availability in Tampa and San Diego soon!
