How we rank for
14% Treatment Costs
One of the most important factors to consider when selecting an drug rehab facility is the overall cost of treatment. When choosing a rehabilitation program, you will usually have two different options to choose from:
Cost for outpatient care is applied to patients who, for whatever reason, are unable to leave their home or job for at least 30 days, and must be treated outside the facility. Outpatient care is also recommended for patients with less severe addiction problems. Outpatient care tends to be less expensive than inpatient care, and can last up to 10–12 weeks.
Inpatient service is for patients who require round-the-clock attention during the rehabilitation process. Because inpatient service takes place entirely within the rehab facility, it tends to be more expensive (but also shorter than) outpatient service. Most inpatient programs include on-site detoxification, therapy, social recreation, and more.
8% Program Duration
While treatment of any duration can be a positive step in the life of someone struggling with drug addiction, longer rehabilitation programs tend to have better success rates in terms of patient recovery. Most programs typically last from 30 to 90 days; however, programs that last longer than 90 days can greatly improve the chance of recovery.
6% On-Site Detoxification
Detoxification—a medically supervised period of drug withdrawal—is a key preliminary step toward recovery. Because the symptoms of drug withdrawal can be dangerous, even life threatening, medically supervised on-site detox is one of the most important features an drug rehab facility can provide.
13% Insurance Coverage
Many people cite cost of treatment as being the main deterrent to participating in a rehab program. For this reason, insurance has become a common solution to cover the cost of treatment. Higher scores are given to rehab centers that accept insurance with HMO or PPO plans and have a wide range of coverages.
5% Program Options
Because every patient is different, Rehab facilities that provide a variety of treatment options are more effective at helping their patients achieve recovery. We evaluate rehab facilities on the following program options:
- First Responders/Military: Programs structured specifically for patients suffering from PTSD
- Christian-Based: 12-step programs (similar to Alcoholics Anonymous) that are specialized for patients with different belief systems
- SMART Recovery: Unlike AA or other 12-step programs, which defer to a higher power, SMART recovery relies more heavily on self-empowerment.
- Age- or Gender-Specific: Programs that recognize and cater to the unique needs of men, women, teenagers, or other specific demographics.
- Individualized: Not a standardized, one-size-fits-all program, but one that is tailored to each individual
11% Rate of Recovery
No universal standard exists against which rehabilitation centers can measure their own success; however, a rehab center’s success rates in the recovery and post-recovery processes tend to be the best indicators of its overall effectiveness.
Reputable rehabilitation facilities have received licensing from the state they operate in, and/or accreditations from an industry-recognized organization in charge of maintaining quality standards. The two most important third-party accreditations we look for come from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and the Joint Commission (JCAHO). These commissions are respectively the largest and second-largest rehab facility accreditors in the nation.
Life after treatment can be difficult for people who struggle with lifelong addictions. Rehab facilities that provide some form of aftercare or alumni program—therapy groups in which former patients can share and empower one another through their struggles—are more effective and preventing a former addict’s relapse later in life.
10% Stability Score
We look at the legal history and financial stability of each company. This metric takes into consideration any bankruptcies, class action lawsuits, government lawsuits, or government investigations a company has had in the last five years.
15% User Score
Authentic user reviews are critical to what we’re doing at BestCompany.com. Because customer service is an important reflection of a company overall, nobody can provide better insights about a company’s performance than actual customers. Consequently, every company’s overall score is influenced, at least in part, by reviews submitted by customers.
