BuildYourSite.com differs from most domain registrars in that they do not sell domains independently. Domains are only available as part of a package. This means their services require you to build and host with them in order to get a domain. BuildYourSite does a poor job of making this clear on their website. (The word "domain" is not mentioned anywhere on the site).
When you select one of their monthly plans, a window pops up asking for your email and domain name. If you don't have one, it lets you search for a .com of your choice to see if it is available. If it is available, the site moves you to the next page in the checkout process. BuildYourSite offers 3 web design plans: standard, advanced, and ecommerce, essentially forcing you to sign up for one of their service plans to get a free domain. You end up paying for the entire package, which ranges from $749.00-$1349.00. This is a huge disadvantage for customers who only need a domain name, since most domain registrar companies offer domains for individual prices. It is also extremely pricey for individuals or small businesses. Competitors typically charge under $15.00/year for a domain name and web hosting prices are less expensive as well.
Other TLD Prices
BuildYourSite's policy restricts customers to having a single Top Level Domain, so pricing for other TLDs is not available. Customers looking to register other TLDs for any price with have to do so with another domain registrar company.
Number of TLDs Available
While some companies only offer around 100 different TLDs and some offer over 500, due to BuildYourSite's policy, you can have only 1 Top-Level Domain name for your website. Most companies offer at least several domain extensions, such as .net, .co, .org, .info, etc. Being allowed to have only one domain name is very limiting. Some companies want to purchase all the TLDs for their company name but will be unable to do so here.
Upon speaking with BuildYourSite, ICANN fees are not discernible. Customer service representatives are not trained to decipher the individual ICANN fees that are most likely included in their web hosting service packages. When checking out on their site, no additional fees are indicated. While most domain name providers include this fee in their advertised cost, each tells you this through a small print notice at the bottom of their home pages.
Since BuildYourSite only offers one .com domain, bulk discounts are not available. This may be a disadvantage for some nonprofits, schools, or even individuals who may be interested in purchasing several domains at once. Some companies who offer a large number of domains offer a discount pyramid. For example: 100 domains = 10% off, 200 domains = 20% off, 300 domains = 30$ off, etc. BuildYourSite falls short in this area.
If you want to see whether BuildYourSite.com offers a WHOIS privacy feature for your domain, this will be challenging as well. Customer representatives appear not to be able to differentiate privacy features for domains from the web design package deals.
Unfortunately BuildYourSite.com does not have apps functionality at this moment. This puts them at a disadvantage with a few domain registrar companies that have already created a mobile app that lets customers manage their domains/websites from a smart device.
Simple Domain Transfer Policies
BuildYourSite.com does not deal in domain-transfers away from their site. They do allow customers to transfer in domains if they have already purchased one prior to purchasing one of their packages. This is a disadvantage for customers who have no options in case they are dissatisfied. In fact, due to the company requiring customers to purchase a web design package to get a .com domain name, everything is connected. So if you want to transfer out a domain name you would likely be forfeiting the website hosting as well. This can be problematic for a business who already has a site with this company but wants to switch. They could lose business during the process. Compared to other domain companies in this niche, some also make it difficult to switch for various reasons, such as holding names hostage or charging large fees or creating delays to keep from losing business.
