The Good

  • Cross selling
  • Customer support
Cross Selling
Interestingly enough, there are no upsells or cross sells when checking out during BuildYourSite's buyer process. Many domain registration companies try to sell you additional services and products with their aggressive upselling techniques, making consumers go through several additional screens of sales pitches in order to buy a domain name. This lack of upselling appears to be due to's only offering web hosting packages, which have all the features that would typically be offered to customers as add-ons already included in theirs package price. Most companies have an average of 2-3 upsells during the checkout process, so in comparison BuildYourSite holds an advantage in this area.
Customer Support
When it comes to customer support, shines. They offer email, phone and live chat for customers with inquiries of any kind. The Live Chat was easy to use and had an expedient response time. The chat box is personalized with the customer representative's image displayed to give communication a more personal human feel. Representatives were very engaged, courteous and answered all questions satisfactorily. They also welcomed questions, instead of some sites where representatives appeared like you were wasting their time if you were not a customer. Phone service is equally positive, with 24/7 support. No forums were available, but due to the nature of the site, it was not needed. They are a web hosting service that handles your website for you-forums are ideal options for sites with DIY site builders.

The Bad

  • Price
  • Other TLD prices
  • Number of TLDs available
  • ICANN fees
  • Bulk price
  • Security features
  • Mobile app
  • Simple domain transfer policies
  • ICANN accreditation
Price differs from most domain registrars in that they do not sell domains independently. Domains are only available as part of a package. This means their services require you to build and host with them in order to get a domain. BuildYourSite does a poor job of making this clear on their website. (The word "domain" is not mentioned anywhere on the site). When you select one of their monthly plans, a window pops up asking for your email and domain name. If you don't have one, it lets you search for a .com of your choice to see if it is available. If it is available, the site moves you to the next page in the checkout process. BuildYourSite offers 3 web design plans: standard, advanced, and ecommerce, essentially forcing you to sign up for one of their service plans to get a free domain. You end up paying for the entire package, which ranges from $749.00-$1349.00. This is a huge disadvantage for customers who only need a domain name, since most domain registrar companies offer domains for individual prices. It is also extremely pricey for individuals or small businesses. Competitors typically charge under $15.00/year for a domain name and web hosting prices are less expensive as well.
Other TLD Prices
BuildYourSite's policy restricts customers to having a single Top Level Domain, so pricing for other TLDs is not available. Customers looking to register other TLDs for any price with have to do so with another domain registrar company.
Number of TLDs Available
While some companies only offer around 100 different TLDs and some offer over 500, due to BuildYourSite's policy, you can have only 1 Top-Level Domain name for your website. Most companies offer at least several domain extensions, such as .net, .co, .org, .info, etc. Being allowed to have only one domain name is very limiting. Some companies want to purchase all the TLDs for their company name but will be unable to do so here.
Upon speaking with BuildYourSite, ICANN fees are not discernible. Customer service representatives are not trained to decipher the individual ICANN fees that are most likely included in their web hosting service packages. When checking out on their site, no additional fees are indicated. While most domain name providers include this fee in their advertised cost, each tells you this through a small print notice at the bottom of their home pages.
Bulk Price
Since BuildYourSite only offers one .com domain, bulk discounts are not available. This may be a disadvantage for some nonprofits, schools, or even individuals who may be interested in purchasing several domains at once. Some companies who offer a large number of domains offer a discount pyramid. For example: 100 domains = 10% off, 200 domains = 20% off, 300 domains = 30$ off, etc. BuildYourSite falls short in this area.
Security Features
If you want to see whether offers a WHOIS privacy feature for your domain, this will be challenging as well. Customer representatives appear not to be able to differentiate privacy features for domains from the web design package deals.
Mobile App
Unfortunately does not have apps functionality at this moment. This puts them at a disadvantage with a few domain registrar companies that have already created a mobile app that lets customers manage their domains/websites from a smart device.
Simple Domain Transfer Policies does not deal in domain-transfers away from their site. They do allow customers to transfer in domains if they have already purchased one prior to purchasing one of their packages. This is a disadvantage for customers who have no options in case they are dissatisfied. In fact, due to the company requiring customers to purchase a web design package to get a .com domain name, everything is connected. So if you want to transfer out a domain name you would likely be forfeiting the website hosting as well. This can be problematic for a business who already has a site with this company but wants to switch. They could lose business during the process. Compared to other domain companies in this niche, some also make it difficult to switch for various reasons, such as holding names hostage or charging large fees or creating delays to keep from losing business.
ICANN Accreditation

The Bottom Line is not designed for customers just wanting to purchase one or more domains. Only one .com domain is allowed, which is only included with the purchase of one of their 3 web design packages. The pricing for these plans-ranging from $749.00-$1349.00- are catered for midscale to large businesses that are looking for bundled web hosting services. Individuals and small businesses should look elsewhere for domain registrar purchasing. Their 24/7 customer service, which is fast, friendly and efficient. Anyone looking to purchase or transfer an individual top-level domain (be it .com or another domain like .org), will be disappointed with The company also lacks iOS and Android apps and ICANN registration.
