Their DNS service is natively integrated with their other products, such as the Content Acceleration and Dynamic Web Acceleration. They have a huge global presence with 161 points of presence (PoPs) in 48 locations across 25 countries, and they advertise high performance and high quality customer service as their standout features. The Good

  • Established company
  • Response time
  • Security features
  • Customer support
Because CDNetworks has established themselves as one of the top global CDN providers, their global DNS benefits from the content delivery network and its advanced features already in place. They promise speed, performance, reliability, scalability, and security for their DNS with 100% uptime. They guarantee that their servers will correctly and consistently answer queries from visitors anywhere in the world, and that their system can handle any number of numbers and any amount of traffic. Built-in redundancy and Anycast routing ensures that DNS queries are answer by the closest operational server location. The DNS response time is generally between 20 and 40 ms, and with 161 PoPs in 48 locations, the majority of CDNetworks users are never far from a server. In particular, CDNetworks has a growing presence in China and Russia and other emerging markets. They also have several web acceleration services-including content, dynamic network, and dynamic web acceleration-that work with the DNS to provide a faster, higher performing overall system. The DNS is cloud-based and supports fast performance on other cloud platforms as well. CDNetworks has a variety of security features for their cloud products, including the DNS, such as:
  • DDoS mitigation
  • data security with PCI certification
  • SSL
  • regulatory compliance
  • continuous monitoring of website traffic
These security measures protect against spoofing and other attacks that could lead to costly outages. CDNetworks offers 24-hour customer support from certified support engineers to their subscribers. The support team can be reached via phone, email, or their self-service Portal. The Portal allows customers to:
  • manage their services and support from one place
  • view traffic, file, stream, and other reports
  • request new services and submit issues or questions
  • customize the dashboard
  • find service notes and updates
  • view submitted support tickets and track their status
CDNetworks customers are also assigned a Customer Success Manager when they sign up, who will, along with customer service representatives, ensure that each client's needs and goals are being met.

The Bad

  • Lack of transparency
Although CDNetworks provides extensive support to their customers for free, it can be difficult to get information from them without being prepared to sign up for specific services. CDNetworks does not publish any information about pricing and requires all interested parties to contact their sales team for a quote, although contracts generally seem to last for one year. The customized pricing packages are tailored to each consumer's needs and are dependent on the amount of:
  • web traffic (queries)
  • number of domains
  • geographic locations a client wants to specifically access which
  • products a client would like to utilize
The lack of pricing transparency makes it very difficult to judge how CDNetworks compares to similar companies. It may also indicate that the DNS and other services offered by CDNetworks are likely not ideal for individuals or very small companies who are looking for minimal, flexible service, whereas corporations with extensive network, security, and acceleration needs are more likely to find products and services to meet those needs.

The Bottom Line

CDNetworks is a globally established CDN provider with a solid and reliable DNS in place as well. Their variety of acceleration service, security features, and market solutions not only improves the speed, security, and overall quality of the DNS, but makes them one of the world's largest and leading CDN providers. CDNetworks uses several different security measures to protect against attacks on the DNS and their other cloud applications. They provide round-the-clock customer service to their clients and have a Portal application that gives clients direct control over their accounts; however, it can be difficult to reach someone directly for non-client parties. They advertise cost-effective pricing, but they do not publicize any pricing specifics: all pricing quotes must from come from a sales representative and will be based on several factors depending on the client's needs.
