DNS Services

What is a DNS Service?

DNS Survey

If you are reading this post, chances are that you have no idea what a DNS Service is. That's okay! In simple terms, DNS technology takes the simple websites that we can remember and translates them into IP addresses. Essentially, it is the internet's directory. DNS stands for Domain Name System. DNS systems make it easier for humans to find things on the web. For example: If I am looking up; the computer actually sees it as 83.652.123.258. Much easier to remember, right?

Now that we know what DNS actually is, let's talk about why it is important. This is what gets the customer to your website. Let's say you own an online business. Something happens with your DNS service and your website is down for 3 hours. Oh yes, a 3 hour break... no! You just lost $439,000 during that 3 hour break.

Remember what we said earlier, DNS services are what get the consumer to your site. More and more companies rely highly on their website and do not want to take a chance on spotty DNS coverage. recently ran a survey with over 500 participants on what the most important feature with a DNS service is. Let's take a look at the features in order of importance:

  1. Reliability: Most DNS Service Companies will have a Service Level Agreement (SLA) that explains what they will be responsible to cover if something were to go wrong. This was considered the most important feature and rightly so. This one focuses on making sure people can find you on the web.
  2. Performance: This takes into account where the majority of your users are coming from and the routing technology that gets them to your site.
  3. Price: Third on the list is price! This shows that users don't mind paying more if they can get a reliable service.
  4. Security: DNS Servers are easy targets for hackers. This feature might become more important as more users realize the need to protect their servers.
  5. Experience: Coming in last, is time in business. As long as they have an affordable, reliable DNS Service that performs well; it doesn't matter how long they have been around.

Hopefully, this has given you an insight into DNS Services. Now that you know what it is, you can know what to look for in your DNS Service. Good luck!
