Founded in 2003, MyHeritage is a genealogy platform that offers users access to billions of historical records, as well as DNA testing for a look into ancestry backgrounds. MyHeritage currently has more than 100 million users and is a leading brand in its industry.
To take a MyHeritage at-home DNA test, order a kit through the company's website. Once the test kit arrives, you activate it online and collect your DNA sample with an easy cheek swab. Then, mail it back to the lab for processing. The testing Lab is CLIA certified and CAP-accredited. There are now two types of tests offered:
Previously known as the MyHeritage DNA Test, because it was the only option available. This is an autosomal DNA test for genetic genealogy. It will provide two main things and its results: ethnicity origins and DNA matches. This test is similar to those from AncestryDNA.
This test offers everything available in the basic ancestry test, plus health screening, with more than 20 personalized health reports.
More health reports will be added in the near future.
Results for MyHeritage DNA tests are presented digitally, online, with the company's interactive website. You get an email notification with a link to your DNA results. The company does not send a copy of the results by email or PDF file to your email. This way, when new updates are made for both genetic testing algorithms and updated relative matching technology, your results will update online as new data is available. Additionally, as more and more people take the test, you'll be provided with ongoing updates to your list of DNA matches.
If you order more than one DNA kit from MyHeritage, you will receive free shipping on that order. This allows customers to save money when they bundle and buy. One DNA kit costs $79 so if you want free shipping, you will pay at least $158, not including tax.
MyHeritage offers a genealogy service that gives you access to billions of international ancestry records. Over 100 million people currently use this service, showing that MyHeritage is a trusted and useful source for ancestry research. Also, more than 3 billion profiles and 46 million family trees exist in the MyHeritage community.
This network benefits MyHeritage DNA test-takers because DNA results can be used in conjunction with your online family tree to aid your research. With permission, you can view the family trees of DNA matches. This helps you to identify connections and figure out how you're exactly related.
MyHeritage’s test analyzes your DNA and estimates which portions originate from which ethnic groups in its database. The DNA results support 42 ethnicities. The DNA results will show you an ethnicity estimate, which will be a percentage breakdown of your ancestral background. This will include your ancestors’ origins and a list of geographic regions your ancestors came from.
MyHeritage has worked on building its DNA database and reference panel with representative samples of people living in specific regions through the Founder Populations Project. The project tested more than 5,000 participants with consistent heritage from the same region or ethnicity, over multiple generations. Founder populations are those whose ancestors lived in the same part of the world.
You can see these ethnicities online and by continent/country and by ethnicity group — Political country borders have changed significantly over the last several hundred years. Ethnic groups don't always exactly align with current political boundaries. Here are al 42 ethnicity groups or regions that MyHeritage tests for:
With MyHeritage genetic testing, users are matched with people that they share DNA with. These are living relatives that have also taken the same DNA test, or uploaded their autosomal data from another testing company. People can use this feature to discover biological family and distant cousins that they didn't know they had.
The MyHeritage DNA test offers several DNA tools to help you use and understand your match results. This includes a chromosome browser and a tool called Auto Clusters that visualizes how your DNA matches are related. It groups together matches that are likely in the same branch of your family tree or have a common ancestor, all color-coded for convenience.
Once you have been tested, there is still an option to share your ethnicity results with friends and family, but there is no feature that shares your DNA matches.
MyHeritage gives customers access to a 14-day free trial for its genealogy services. This gives you unlimited access to more than 9 billion historical records, unlimited family tree creations, matches to other family trees and historical records, and more. After the trial ends, MyHeritage will charge your credit card on file $299 annually. Unfortunately, month-to-month payment options are not available when signing up for the free trial.
After mailing your DNA sample to the MyHeritage DNA lab, you will receive your results in three to four weeks. This is significantly quicker than many other DNA testing companies, some of which take up to eight to ten weeks to process your results.
People that have taken an autosomal test through another DNA testing company can upload their raw genetic data to be run through the MyHeritage algorithm.
However, people that upload their data cannot opt-in to the health reports section. The raw DNA upload is only available for users to get info from the ancestry test, including ethnicity groups and DNA matches.
New to MyHeritage is the option to add health screening. This test provides insights into health risks and helps consumers see if they have a genetic predisposition toward certain health risks.
If you already purchased the ancestry-only testing service, you can upgrade to include the health reports through your MyHeritage account. There is a fee of $120, and you don't have to provide a new sample and wait for it to get back to the lab in the mail.
In the United States when you take the health test, you fill out a health history questionnaire. Before you see the results, a physician reviews the questionnaire and evaluates your test results to determine if you would benefit from genetic counseling. If so a free consultation is available with a genetic counselor from PWNHealth via phone or video, to help interpret and understand the results. This is not a service that 23andMe offers.
MyHeritage also offers the health subscription service for $99 per year. It will allow you new health testing results as they are released.
MyHeritage customer service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is hard to come by with other DNA testing companies.
While some DNA companies make you do a saliva sample, this company only requires a cheek swab sample. Many consumers find this sample method easier to do at home, when compared to the saliva sample, because the saliva sample can take quite a bit of time and has to be properly mixed with a holding solution.
MyHeritage does not offer month-to-month payment options for access to its databases of historical records. If you want access to its genealogy services, you will have to pay one lump sum of $299 every year. Once you sign up for a MyHeritage account, you will have a 14-day free trial and if you don’t cancel before the 14 days are up, you will then be charged the $299.
The MyHeritage DNA Ancestry-Only Test it's available everywhere except Israel.
The MyHeritage DNA+Ancestry test is available widely; however not in the following places:
When anyone receives autosomal DNA testing for ancestry results, they will be provided with an ethnicity estimate breakdown of their heritage. This shows what you inherited from mom and dad, combined. It's presented as geographical regions or ethnicities. Different DNA testing companies use their own research and algorithms to compose the genetic markers they are looking for and how they classify them into the disparate groups. With MyHeritage DNA, you can get results from 42 different ethnicities, some competitors offer hundreds of different possibilities.
MyHeritage had a data breach in October 2017 that exposed more than 92 million users’ email addresses and encrypted passwords. MyHeritage assured the public it was unlikely the passwords would be unencrypted, but the company still advised customers to change their passwords as a precaution.
Since the data breach, the company has improved security measures by adding Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) to all MyHeritage accounts.
This testing service only offers an autosomal test. If you are looking for insight into your Y chromosomal DNA for paternal haplogroups or mitochondrial DNA for maternal haplogroups, you're looking for another type of ancestry testing. Here are a few services that offer Y-DNA and mtDNA analysis:
