Prescribing effective psychiatric drugs depends on several lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors. Variable factors leave doctors and patients with unanswered questions and unresolved mental illness as they search for the right prescription. Patients and clinicians often face periods of uncertainty as they search for effective antidepressants and antipsychotics.

In cases of severe depression, prescribing an effective drug could mean the difference between life and death. Genomind provides a tool that guides the search for an effective psychiatric drug, eliminating unnecessary cycles of trial and error.

Genomind is a pharmacogenomic testing company that seeks to improve psychiatric treatment decisions through genetic analysis. The test can be used to help treat those with bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, and autism. The company has been recognized in several media outlets such as the Dr. Oz Show and Dr. Phil as a tool that brings renewed hope to a patient’s life.

Genomind uses reliable labs with CLIA, CAP, and New York State Lab certifications. Test results are delivered within three days of arriving at the lab. Samples are sent and received with a paid overnight shipping label. Patients may be able to pay for the test through their insurance company.

As of 2020, Genomind offers a consumer DNA test for customers to learn about their genetic predisposition to mental health conditions. Genomind is the first company to offer genetic testing related to mental health.

Learn more about the difference between the two reports below:

Full Mental Health Report Core Anxiety and Depression Report
  • Best for those with multiple health conditions or conditions other than anxiety and depression
  • Includes an analysis of 24 mental health related genes for 10 different mental health conditions
  • Includes possible genetic interaction with over 130 different mental health medications
  • Best for those struggling specifically with anxiety or depression
  • Not as comprehensive and not as expensive as the Full Mental Health Report
  • Focuses on 15 genes related to anxiety and depression and an analysis of 130 mental health drugs

Each report comes with a PGX Rx MetaType Card that records genetic information related to your drug metabolism. This card can be shared with your healthcare providers. The Rx card is unique to Genomind.

Unique Mental Health Consumer DNA Test

In 2020, Genomind released a new direct-to-consumer DNA test that analyzes 38 genetic variants and how they affect 29 mental health traits. The accuracy of the Genomind Mental Health Map relies on hundreds of scientific studies. The Genomind Mental Health focuses on Genomind’s “7 Core Genetic Mental Health Capabilities:”

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Mood
  • Focus and memory
  • Substance use and habits
  • Sleep
  • Social behavior
  • Eating behavior

Results are available through an online interactive report that includes information on 59 behavioral predispositions, additional resources, and lifestyle recommendations. Tests can be purchased through the Genomind website or Amazon. The DNA test requires a simple cheek swab.

The Genomind Mental Health Map does not necessitate a prescription or clinician approval. Each test comes with a 30-minute consolation with Genomind BrainTrust. The team of genetic counselors can help answer any questions related to your report.

Note: Customers should consider the cost of this test before purchase. The Genomind Mental Health Map currently sells for $599 and does not qualify for insurance coverage. This is considerably more expensive than many other consumer DNA tests.

Research-Based Product

Genomind’s website highlights several studies to test the effectiveness of using Genomidn Professional PGx Express. In an open-label study done in 2015, Genomind found that 87 percent of participants demonstrated improved mental health conditions.

Another study found that individuals who used the Genomind Genecept Assay test recorded significantly lower healthcare costs over a six-month period. The lower costs were attributed to fewer inpatient hospitalizations and emergency room visits.

Genomind continues to update its tests and processes to reflect new scientific research. The company strives to stay at the forefront of innovation by providing the most accurate tests to its customers.

Fast Test Delivery

Each Genomind test comes with a paid overnight shipping label. Once the patient has completed the cheek swab test, ship the sample back in the prepaid envelope. Customers should receive results within three business days of processing the sample at the lab.

Healthcare professionals can access the results through the online Clinician Portal for quick digital analysis. The fast test delivery is a great benefit for those looking for quick answers.

Certified Labs

Lab qualifications impact the accuracy of tests. Genomind holds many of the top lab certifications that exceed the standard for federal guidelines. The lab is CAP-accredited, CLIA, and New York State certified. The New York State certification is one of the most difficult certifications to receive.

The Genomind lab also runs every sample twice to ensure accuracy. Customers can feel confident that their sample and results follow a methodical process for best reliability.

Possible Insurance Coverage

Patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder or anxiety who have negative results with a previous medication are candidates for insurance coverage. The out-of-pocket cost of the Genomind Professional PGx Express FULL Mental Health Report varies based on a patient’s insurance provider.

The majority of patients don't pay more than $399 for a Genomind test. An HSA and FSA can be used to cover the entire cost of the test. The cost of the test with no insurance is $2,000.

If your insurance won’t cover the test, Genomind offers a Patient Assitance Program for qualified customers. Patients should discuss any billing costs with their insurance provider and the Genomind customer service. Insurance coverage and the Patient Assistance program can help significantly reduce the cost of the test.

Access to Expert Consultation

Genomind provides access to a team of pharmacogenetics experts for healthcare professionals. Genomind’s consultative services are helpful for providers who have specific questions about their patients’ results. The team is made up of Ph.D. and Pharmacist staff members. Patients and parents are invited to join in on the expert consultations if they are interested.

Resources for Clinicians and Patients

Patients and Clinicians benefit from the additional resources available through Genomind. Patients can read about topics related to mental health on the Genomind blog.

For example, the blog has articles about understanding drug metabolism, treating mental health conditions in children, managing a family’s mental health during the pandemic, etc. These articles are a great resource for those seeking guidance on tough mental health issues.

The company also has Patient Gateway to deliver the report to patients. Patients who take the pharmacogenetic test receive access to a modified report 30 days after the full report is sent to the clinician.

Clinicians benefit from Genomind’s partnership with NeuroFlow. NeuroFlow is a digital platform that allows healthcare providers to communicate results and treatment decisions to patients. The platform is especially helpful for remote communications and tracking patient progress.

The Bad

  • Clinical Restriction on Pharmacogenetic Test
  • Contested Scientific Claims

Clinical Restriction on Pharmacogenetic Test

The Genomind Professional PGx Express (pharmacogenetic test) must be ordered and administered through a healthcare provider. This process ensures that customers are given the right information and can inform the correct medical staff. If you are interested in taking this Genomind test, talk with your healthcare provider.

Contested Scientific Claims

Some experts argue against claims made in pharmacogenomics such as being able to predict effective drugs based on genetics. A few years ago, Genomind removed drug recommendations from its reports, because the FDA felt that the testing process was not backed by enough scientific evidence.

Genomind began a long process of submitting scientific evidence for its tests. In 2019, Genomind received FDA clearance to restore medication recommendations in the physician’s report. However, none of its tests have full FDA approval.

The Genomind test should be used in conjunction with other information about the patient such as lifestyle, current medications, medical history, etc. The genetic test is only able to contribute some information to the overall picture.

The Bottom Line

Genomind offers innovative testing solutions for pinpointing effective antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs. These tests may become a life-saving solution to those who have struggled to find the right medication.

After talking with their healthcare provider, patients can decide between a full mental health report or a report focused on depression and anxiety. Customers can also order a consumer mental health test without Clinician approval to learn more about their genetic predisposition to mental health conditions.

Patients may be able to qualify for insurance coverage depending on their provider. This will help reduce the out-of-pocket expense. Clinicians can benefit from the Genomind reports with access to expert consultation and a patient-provider platform.

Patients and clinicians should be thorough and cautious in experimenting with new medication. Results from these reports do not provide all the necessary information to write an effective prescription. Both parties should continue personal research and closely monitor drug response during trial and error phases.
