With more than 18 million registered users across its online brands, Findmypast is a leader in genealogy. Its other online brands include Genes Reunited, The British Newspaper Archive, and many more. A partner of Living DNA, the company does not offer its own DNA tests but instead offers Living DNA tests through Findmypast’s website. There is also an add-on test option that will show you migration histories through your maternal and paternal DNA.
If you’ve already taken an ancestry DNA test through another provider, Findmypast allows you to upload your DNA results for free to its database. This gives you access to Findmypast’s family networks and allows you to find and connect with living relatives.
Findmypast accepts DNA test uploads from the following providers: AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage, and FamilyTreeDNA. The company’s website mentions that if you have a test from a different provider, you can still email Findmypast to determine if you’re eligible for a free upload.
You can add deep ancestry to your basic DNA test kit for $29.95. It is the full Living DNA 3-in-1 add-on that takes a deeper dive into your ancestry by showing interactive maps of your ancestors’ migration histories through mtDNA (maternal) and YDNA (paternal). Your results are mapped across 80 global regions, 21 of which are from Britain and Ireland.
Findmypast does not offer its own DNA testing. The DNA test on Findmypast’s website is from Living DNA. We suggest reading Living DNA’s Terms of Service as well as Findmypast’s to ensure you have all the details you need before committing to a Living DNA test through Findmypast.
Although the DNA test is through Living DNA, purchasing the test is still easily navigable on Findmypast’s website. You will receive your DNA results within six to eight weeks.
If you want unlimited access to Findmypast’s historical records, you have to pay a monthly subscription fee. For the Essential British and Irish subscription, it is $14.95 per month or $129 per year. This includes the records to begin your genealogy journey with access to a family tree builder. For the Ultimate British and Irish subscription, it is $19.95 per month or $179 per year. This includes access to all Findmypast’s records, exclusive content, and guidance from the company’s experts.
There is a 14-day free trial period for both subscription options if you want to test out the service before fulling committing.
Although Findmypast has a large database of online records from across the world, its focus is primarily on the United Kingdom and Ireland. This may prove a limitation to people who want detailed records from other parts of the world.
