In 1936, ABT was a small store with only three employees. Today, Abt is the largest independently owned, single location retailer of electronics, appliances, and home goods.
Abt carries tens of thousands of items, including major kitchen appliances, laundry appliances, grills, outdoor furniture, plumbing equipment, TV and home theater products, computers, electronic wearable devices, and more.
Abt gained national recognition for its website, which was launched in 1997 (as the store became an authorized online retailer for brands such as Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Bose, and Onkyo).
If you're interested in checking out Abt's 100,000 square-foot showroom, you'll be surprised to know that the store also features its own mini-mall (with custom high-end boutique shops). You can also check out the 7,500-gallon saltwater aquarium that's used to demonstrate the image quality of the store's wide selection of cameras and camcorders. Plus, an atrium with an elegant fountain mimics the famed Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas (the inspiration for the store's design).
Shoppers can find just about anything they need for their home from Abt's extensive product selection. The company prides itself on offering a variety of products from a variety of brands.
For example, say you need a new washing machine. You can browse the Abt website and search for top-loading, front-loading, stacked units, and more. Once you choose your type of washing machine, you can then search through the brands, including LG, Whirlpool, and Maytag.
Here's a brief list of some of the products Abt offers:
|Major Kitchen Appliances||Computers, Phones, Tablets||Exercise and Fitness Equipment|
If you have an old TV or a computer monitor taking up space in your home, we recommend looking into Abt's trade-in program. The company will take your old electronics and give you an Abt gift card (which can be used to purchase an item from Abt.com).
If you live near the company's Glenview, Illinois showroom, you can bring in your device for appraisal. Or you can determine the value of your item at home with the online appraisal tool.
If your electronics don't qualify for a trade-in value, you're also welcome to drop them off at Abt for safe, responsible recycling.
If you're unhappy with a product from Abt, the company is happy to let you exchange the item, or they will give you a refund. The process of returning or exchanging an item is relatively simple.
Simply log in to your Abt account, access the order, and select the items you wish to return. Keep in mind that the items must be in its original packaging and condition. The next step is to print the return shipping label and attach it to the box.
The final step is to drop off the box at any authorized UPS Shipping Center. If you're unsure where one is, you can use the link provided by Abt to find one near you.
Once the Returns Department has received and inspected your return, your refund or exchange will be issued within two business days.
Abt offers free technical support with every purchase. The company's toll-free tech support is available 14 hours a day, seven days a week.
Additionally, Abt has a service shop inside its retail store. This department employs hundreds of technicians and is an authorized repair service center for most of the brands Abt carries. This is extremely helpful as it allows you to send damaged/broken products to the store and not have to worry about voiding warranties.
Abt also offers several free, in-house tech classes. In these classes, you can figure out how to use (or better use) your new camera, computer, and more.
Although Abt boasts free shipping and easy returns, there are a few caveats.
First, Abt offers free shipping on most orders. If your item does not have the "free shipping" icon, it doesn't qualify. Plus, free shipping is only available to the continental United States (excluding Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico). Additionally, there is a "Free shipping on orders over $35" icon. This is different from the free shipping icon and means your cart subtotal must be over $35. This also only applies to those within the continental United States.
We also noticed that Abt stated, "Abt has a 30-day return policy on most items." Unfortunately, not everything has a 30-day return policy. This means you'll need to be extra diligent about checking the return policy before making an order.
For example, camcorders, digital cameras, and camera lenses only have a 14-day return policy and there is a 15 percent restocking fee. Cell phones also have a 14-day return/exchange policy, and there is a $45 restocking fee on opened items.
If you buy luggage, travel accessories, or a Tumi product, you only have five days to return the item if you're unsatisfied. You do have 30 days if you want to do an exchange.
Abt does disclose all this information on the website, but we highly recommend doing your research, so there are no unexpected surprises (or costs).
If you have a computer problem that can't be solved over the phone, you can pay to have Abt run a diagnostic test. However, the test itself is $79. And that's on top of whatever else needs to be fixed.
