New subscriptions for SafeSync by Trend Micro have been suspended as of January 31, 2016. Any subscriptions which were purchased or renewed prior to this date will remain operational for current subscribers only through January 31, 2017. All stored backup files will need to be downloaded before the end of service for that account. For example, if a customer purchased a subscription in October, 2015, their renewal would come in October, 2016. They would need to backup their files to another computer or service by that date in order to prevent the backups from being lost. Current customers wishing to learn more about how this change affects them are counseled to visit Trend Micro’s SafeSync End of Life and End of Service page. The Review Team advises all current customers to verify the date of their subscription to prevent data loss.

The Good

  • Awards
  • Time in business
  • Unlimited devices
  • Customer support
  • Pricing

Safesync has a great umbrella company, Trend Micro, to back its products. They have quite a few awards for their services. Trend Micro is the "global market leader in server security," according to IDC. They've also received quite a few awards over the years, like 13 consecutive years as Leader in Endpoint Protection Platforms, as well as number 1 in small business content security for 4 years running. For 2014 they also received the Best Protection Award from Though none of the awards are directly related to their SafeSync products, you can rest assured that their products are well tested by those in the business.

They have been in business for over 25 years, which also bodes well, partly because a lot of data storage companies haven't been around for very long.

For their services, they do offer unlimited devices for any of their plans, which is great if you need to back up quite a few computers and mobile phones. You also have the ability to share any files in your storage, and even post from your back up to your social media accounts.

They do have a variety of support and a great FAQs section, which sounds great for those who need a little extra help with technology. They have live chat available, as well as email and phone support from 5 AM to 5 PM.

For their prices, they have extremely reasonable prices, especially for a yearly services with a decent amount of storage. For 20 GB of storage, it ends up being about $3/month. They also offer a free trial for their services, so that you have the chance to try their product before you commit. But, if you don't end up liking their product, they do have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The Bad

  • No free version
  • Cloud backup only

They do not offer a free version of their product, and their product is unable to backup anywhere else other than their cloud.

The Bottom Line

Trend Micro seems like a good company, and SafeSync seems like a pretty straightforward, no bells-and-whistles-attached data storage company. Their product has the ability to file share, protect, and safeguard your documents, as well as the ability to back up your mobile devices with mobile apps for both android and apple smartphones. We would recommend SafeSync as a product for anyone who is looking for simple data storage.
