Unitrends, a Massechusetts-based computer backup services company, announced last week that it has hired Kevin Weiss as its new CEO. Unitrends had unexpectedly found a job vacancy at its helm when Mike Coney was asked to leave without explanation.
Weiss has an impressive resume. He worked as president for McAfee, one of the world's largest technology security companies. Weiss has also held leadership positions with Bertram Capital, Ariba, BindView, BMC Software, and IBM. Most recently, he was the chairman and CEO of Xhibit Corp, the parent company of SkyMall.
Of the move, Weiss said, "I believe that the data protection industry has unprecedented growth opportunities." He further elaborated in an interview with CRN, "The growth in data is ridiculous. It's not going to stop."
Unitrends currently serves over 11,000 customers for whom it provides appliances and software for backup, archiving, instant recovery and disaster recovery for protecting corporate data.
In 2014, Unitrends released a number of new products, including its hybrid cloud Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) and Recovery Assurance offerings, as well as Boomerang, its VMware-to-Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud migration, cloudbursting and DRaaS tool. The company also completed two acquisitions (PHD Virtual and Yuruware) and moved its headquarters from Columbia, South Carolina, to Burlington, Massachusetts.
Weiss's diverse background will serve him well as Unitrends continues to grow and add more services. Hm. I wonder what you get when you combine data backup, antivirus, and Skymall? A large anti-bacterial suitcase for your dog? Get me my credit card!
