This season's New York Fashion Week runs from September 10 - 17. And while it's a relative small event, NYFW rakes in a great deal of attention, and holds an even larger amount of influence on the fashion industry. Even if your interest in fashion doesn't extend much further than watching Fashion Police or simply choosing to wear a clean shirt in the morning, New York Fashion Week will more or less how people are dressing themselves for the next six months - and we've assembled a brief guide to tell you all about it.
New York Fashion Week is a twice-yearly gathering of fashion designers, celebrities, buyers, and the media to unveil and promote next season's clothing lines. This gala represents one of four major fashion events, the other three being held in Paris, Milan, and London. This fashion event is more or less an opportunity for designers to show off their stuff, department stores to beef up their inventory, and for influencers to, well, influence how popular these looks will be over the next six months.
Unfortunately for most of us, New York Fashion Week is a by-invitation-only event, and tickets to the actual runway shows themselves are incredibly scarce, barely clipping the 200-count range. As such, the list of who can attend is very short; if you're a celebrity, you had better also be a fashion icon. And if you're a fashion icon, you'd better have an Instagram following (Taylor Swift and Beyonce are setting the bar pretty high at 40+ million).
Not to say New York Fashion Week is completely exclusive. New York Fashion Week is also notorious for its daily after parties and celebrity sitings. Of course, as several of the designers and models are relatively new to the scene, you may run into a fashion celebrity without even knowing it.
Over 200 designers are presenting clothing lines this week. These designers range from household names like Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors, to lesser-known up-and-comers such as Area and Creatures of the wind. But don't think that only the high-end, fashion forward designers are the only ones presenting; even sports apparel giant Nike is unveiling its new junior line this week.
Below is a list of some of the main players in this week's fashion show:
The event is currently being live streamed over the Internet at NewYorkFashionWeekLive.com, but if you're unwilling to sit through frequent commercials, or designers that don't necessarily speak to you, you can also follow the @NYFW Twitter feed for design highlights and exclusive runway photos. Last of all, E! News remains a steady source for fashion industry developments and daily recaps.
Whether you're a diehard fashion junkie, or simply want to look presentable on a first date or job interview, New York Fashion Week has a little something for everyone. Department stores like Norstrom, JC Penny, and even Target are popular destinations for many of these designers because they provide the widest access to the average consumer. Chances are good, if you shop at any of these outlets, that you will find pieces from this week's fashion gala by Thanksgiving time.
Staying in tune with fashion trends as well as upcoming releases will help you stay ahead of the curve, and clue you in to when you can preorder your favorite looks before they're all sold out.
