The Honest Kitchen was founded in 2002 by Lucy Postins, a pet owner who is passionate about taking care of animals and keeping them healthy and strong. As of 2019, the company had expanded to 55 employees. It is a pet food company that provides human-grade food for cats and dogs from trusted sources.
The Honest Kitchen’s pet food can be ordered online or bought in-store at many local pet stores and national retailers. The company also offers a rewards program for frequent buyers.
Human-grade means the food is fit for human consumption, and for The Honest Kitchen, this is not up for debate. The company prides itself on the quality and integrity of its pet food offerings, and abides by the same standards of safety and cleanliness that human food facilities do.
The Honest Kitchen’s website has a feature that allows customers to enter information about their pet, then the site gives recommendations for the best food options that are specific to the information entered. This gives customers security in knowing that the pet food they are buying is created specifically for pets like theirs.
The Honest Kitchen offers two different types of rewards programs: online and in store.
With online rewards, customers can sign up then shop online. They earn points every time they shop, as well as for other things such as following the company’s social media accounts, referring a friend, etc. Points can be redeemed for discounts on future orders.
With in-store rewards, customers can sign up at their local pet food store for either the Small or Large Honest Bucks program. Most stores will track your purchases automatically, and after you reach your tenth bag or box of food, you can receive a free product in the store.
The Honest Kitchen offers a special discount on pet food for qualified 501(c)(3) Non-Profit rescues. Not only does this benefit the rescues and shelters themselves, but it also reflects well on the company and its mission to make the world a better place for pets and humans alike.
The Honest Kitchen is lacking in diverse options for different types of cats. When one or two filters are applied to different features of cat food, such as “whole grain” or “kitten”, the number of options often drops to one or zero. In fact, while the company offers 78 products for dogs, it offers only 5 for cats.
In addition, the personalized Product Selector feature does not necessarily guarantee the company will have an option for your pet. For example, when you input a hypothetical adult cat that is chill/less active and prefers dry food, the Product Selector returns zero recommendations for food options.
Unlike some of its competitors, The Honest Kitchen charges a shipping cost within the contiguous United States. Shipping for orders less than $49 costs $5. However, if your order exceeds $49 after any discounts are applied, shipping is free.
Shipping rates to anywhere outside of the contiguous United States are determined during the checkout process, as these are based on the weight of the order and its final destination.
