U.S. Career Institute was founded in 1981 in California. Amid name changes, ownership changes and headquarter relocations, the organization has remained solidly committed to providing certification options in a variety of fields for professionals seeking to further their careers and expand their opportunities. U.S. Career Institute offers distance education where course takers can go at their own speed and timing.

The Good

  • Cost
  • Duration
  • Program offerings
  • Accreditation

The organization has a number of benefits, including:

  • Cost. Tuition is reasonably priced and comparable to other distance certification programs. Cost does vary, but generally, program tuition is between $500 and $1,500. Massage therapy is the most expensive at $2,289, while personal care assistant is the least expensive at $349. There are payment options, plus, program users who are not satisfied within the first five days may receive a full refund. After five days, a 100 percent refund is not available. All active service members, honorably discharged veterans and their families get a 25% tuition break.
  • Duration. Courses can be completed in as little as four months. And because USCI is a self-paced institution, courses can be started at anytime-whenever it's convenient and right for the student.
  • Program offerings. One advantageous thing about USCI is that it offers both certification courses-designed to enhance skills and better prepare students for future jobs-as well as associate's degrees in 12 different areas of study, including accounting, technology, business management and marketing. All courses are completed from the comfort and ease of one's own home or location or choice.
  • Accreditation. To certify its legitimacy, USIC is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. It also partners with numerous professional organizations and educational fields.

USCI is perfect for adults who are currently working as professionals in the field of their choice. The certification courses are a wonderful way for the student to bolster his or her skills and demonstrate to his or her employer their willingness to acquire more knowledge related to their work. Sometimes, employer will reimburse students for taking the certification courses.

The Bad

  • No guarantees
  • Credits not transferable

USCI course takers are not guaranteed more income, better job opportunities or anything of the like. Students who take the certification courses for this reason should realize their efforts may not lead to their desired end.

USCI credits for courses will not carry over into programs at different institutions. Students should take the courses with the mindset that they are learning new information and gaining valuable skills, bot with the intent that they are going to further their college ambitions.

The Bottom Line

USCI offers an impressive number of well-put-together courses that would benefit anyone. If a customer's employer desires a certification or a certain skill development, USCI courses fulfill this beautifully. However, USCI should be separated from scholastic ambitions, as it will not add to a student's college experience.

I took the Medical Coding and Billing Course offered through the U.S. Career Institute. Afterwards, as I was applying for jobs, I became aware that their accreditations are not the ones employers are looking for. Any Coding or Billing course through any institution that is not AAPC or AHIMA accredited is useless and will not help you get a job. The U.S. Career Institute has neither of these accreditations. Google search for online programs that are AAPC or AHIMA accredited, there are inexpensive online options with the appropriate credentials in a similar price range.
