How we rank for

12%Price

Using a car service for everyday transportation can be expensive. Price is a very important factor when it comes to selecting the right car service plan for you. For many pickup services, the price for a car changes based on the city they are in. For this category, we look at the average price someone in L.A. will pay for a taxi service. This price includes the price for a ride, price of gas, price per minute / hour, plus any additional fees. Screen Shot 2016-07-25 at 11.57.17 AM

10%Waiting Time / Scheduling

This category looks at how long you will be waiting to use a company’s car service. For those interested in taxi services, what is the average wait time for a car? We also take note of whether the company lets you request car service in advance. For example, can you request a taxi in the morning to pick you up later that afternoon? The shorter period of time, on average, a rider is expected to wait for pick-up will get higher scores.

10%Availability

The Availability criteria covers one main aspect: the number of cities the pickup service is available in. The more cities the car service is in, and the more cars available, the higher the ranking. If available, we also look at the number of cars available in each location. This lets us know about how many cars will be available at a given time. However, many car services have high fluctuating numbers and drivers tend to set their own hours - so it’s not an accurate representation of availability.

12%Services

While the overall service is to provide rides to customers, there are aspects of the service that can help differentiate one provider from another. These services will analyze the payment format (whether or not a rider needs to pay on the spot or go paperless), reservation requirements, car options, and rating systems. Providers that offer all of the following in ways that best serve customers will receive higher scores.

8%Additional Costs

There is an average base price per mile for car sharing services. However, some ride sharing providers require additional costs whether it concerns minimum fees or other service charges. Specifically, our scoring takes into consideration the base price, minimum ride fee, cancellation fees, and safety fees (if applicable).

5%Mobile App

The mobile functionality of a service is a large part of the overall platform. If it is not accessible or easy to use, the customer can have a more difficult time requesting and using the service. This portion of the criteria takes into consideration the mobile app ratings, functionality, and compatible devices.

3%Better Business Bureau (BBB) Rating

When ranking companies, we like to take the Better Business Bureau into account. Even though it’s not a complete indication of a company’s trustworthiness, BBB rankings are important to many consumers. We keep the BBB factor in our overall rankings low because BBB rankings are not always 100% true. Additionally, some companies have low ratings from the BBB because of the industry they are in.

1%Ride Type

This category takes into account how many different types of ride types that a company offers to its users. Services that offer more will score better here.

4%Time in Business

The business model for car sharing or pick up services has taken off in recent years. There are companies that have seen massive growth as people flock to use their services, while others have sprouted and subsequently gone out of business. While longevity is not the most important factor in determining which service to use, it does say something about the company. Car sharing companies that have been in business for ten years or more will receive the maximum number of points for this criteria.

15%Consumer Reviews

This site is designed to let consumers share their experiences. Given our expertise in many industries and the knowledge that we have gained over the years, we know that some of the most important opinions come from real customers. That is why we have allocated so much of our overall rating to the voice of our validated customer reviews. The Consumer Reviews Score is broken down into three metrics:
  1. The Average User Score
  2. Total Number of Reviews
  3. Total Number of Reviews in the last 12 months
These 3 metrics not only help us understand what consumers are saying, they also help us gain an understanding of volume and recency. All of which are critical to understanding the value of a company in the eyes of the consumer. Note: this is different from the user score that is displayed on each company profile. The "user score" that is publicly displayed is the average of all user scores published for a given profile.
User Review Moderation
In order to prevent fake and misleading user reviews, BestCompany.com has a review moderation team specifically assigned to moderating all user reviews for all companies listed on the site. This team follows a very specific and strict moderation process that has been designed by gathering learnings from mistakes other major review sites have made in the past. This moderation process involves a “flag” system where a flag is assessed for each negative attribute associated with a user review. Too many flags result in a disapproval of a user review. Some of the things our moderation staff looks for and assigns potential flags to include:
  • Email address verification of the user
  • IP address duplication and region check
  • User review semantic verification
  • Is the user an employee of the organization?
  • Is the user associated with a competitor of the organization?
  • Foul language of any kind
  • Relevance of the content pertaining to the company and the review
As you can probably tell, we take our user review moderation process very seriously. We believe accuracy and authenticity is critical when it comes to user reviews, and as a result we are constantly finding new ways to evolve our user moderation process to make it better. Please note that while we do our best to manually moderate each and every user review, mistakes can be made; however, our dedication to resolving errors in our process is what sets us apart from other review sites in the industry.
