Turo, formerly Relay Rides, is a peer-to-peer car sharing company that started in San Francisco, CA in 2009. Similar to the Airbnb model, local car owners advertise and rent out their vehicles to drivers who would prefer to avoid the standard rental car experience.

The company launched nationally in March of 2012 and is currently available in over 4,500 cities and over 300 airports throughout the United States. Turo is supported by top-tier investors, including August Capital, Google Ventures, Shasta Ventures, Canaan Partners, and Trinity Ventures.

Variety of Vehicles Available

To cater to individual preferences, the company offers over 800 different car models to choose from. Renters can choose from cars, SUVs, minivans, trucks, convertibles, hybrids and vans. One can also filter by rental period for long-term rentals, the vehicle make, features like all-wheel drives, and more. 

Simple Sharing Process

Turo has an easy, user-friendly, and customizable rental sign up. In order to sign up for car sharing, create a Turo account by simply signing into your Facebook or email account. 

The first time you sign up for a car, all you have to do is enter some general information, choose a car, rental date, and time. You can either decline additional insurance or purchase the Basic or Premium option, each with varying physical damage and liability protection.

In order to get the car and the keys, all the renter needs to do is meet the owner and show them their driver's license. Some owners will even deliver the car right to the renter. Returning the car is simple, as the renter just needs to return the car with a tank full of gas to where it was initially picked up. 

Rental Prices and Fees

Turo rents vehicles priced approximately 35% lower than other car rental options. The price ranges depending on what car one gets. There is no membership fee and cars generally go for a flat rate of $40 a day. 

In addition to rental fees, buyers may be charged fees for additional miles, parking tickets and cleaning fees. To get the car's trip price, one must multiply the relevant trip rate advertised on the vehicle by the duration. There are also the following fees:

  • Trip Fee - 10% of trip price
  • Protection Fee - varies by if one chooses a premium (40% of car's rate), basic (15% of car's rate), or the decline option
  • Young Driver Fee-20% fee of the trip price for people under age 25
  • Delivery Fee-varies based on owner's settings
  • Airport Fee-10% fee of trip price if the rented vehicle is involved in the Turo Airport Lot program

It should also be noted that payment information, including debit card and credit card payments, are made through the Turo app or website, not the rental host. 

Insurance Coverage

Owner Protection

With Turo, there are private and commercial hosts. When it comes to Turo’s insurance, owners can either use Turo’s policies or decline coverage to be eligible for a commercial, third-party insurance policy. 

Declining coverage: Owners can decline Turo’s insurance coverage. This makes them considered a Commercial Host. As such, they must have their policy verified by Turo prior to renting out any of their vehicles. 

Turo’s insurance offers three different tiers of protection for owners to choose from. All three plans come with $1 million in liability coverage and physical damage protection that covers the value of the car, up to $125,000. From there, the plans differ in host deductible, cost, and other amenities. 

Premium Package: 

  • Host deductible for damage to the car: $0
  • Replacement vehicle provided during repairs: Up to $30/day for 10 days
  • Exterior wear and tear coverage
  • Loss of rental income coverage
  • Cost to owner: 35% of trip price

Standard Package: 

  • Host deductible for damage to the car: $0
  • Replacement vehicle provided during repairs: Up to $30/day for 10 days
  • Cost to owner: 25% of trip price

Basic Package: 

  • Host deductible for damage to car: Up to $3,000—Turo pays 20% for the first $3,750, then above that they pay up to the $125,000 limit
  • Cost to owner: 15% of trip price

Guest Protection

Just as you would when you rent a car with other rental car companies, before you complete your booking, you have to choose which protection plan you want for your trip. 

If you choose a commercial host, then the host will provide you with options. None of the guest plans cover mechanical or interior damage. 

If you already have personal insurance, Turo’s coverage will supplement your existing coverage. Policies differ in the amount of liability insurance, deductible payment required, and damage protection. 

Supreme Package: 

  • Liability coverage: Up to $1 million
  • Deductible: $0
  • Physical damage protection up  to the actual value of the car

Premium Package: 

  • Liability coverage: Up to $1 million
  • Deductible: $500
  • Physical damage protection up  to the actual value of the car

Basic Package: $3,000 deductible

  • Liability coverage: Minimum for the state where the car is registered 
  • Deductible: $3,000
  • Physical damage protection up  to the actual value of the car

Decline coverage: 

  • Liability coverage: Minimum for the state where the car is registered 
  • Deductible: The full cost of damage
  • No physical damage protection

Roadside assistance is available 24/7 for guests driving a vehicle covered by a Turo protection plan; however, depending on your plan, you may be charged. 

Turo will pay for the dispatch fee and there is no charge for tows shorter than 15 miles in the US. 

Beyond that, the party that caused the need for a tow will have to pay. Basically, if the car you are renting has a mechanical problem or an issue due to improper maintenance, the owner will have to pay, while locking the keys out or killing the battery by leaving the lights on will leave you, the renter, at fault.

Car Retrieval

Since Turo does not operate with clients out of a specific agency, it utilizes car owners that do not use their cars on an everyday basis. Renters must meet the car owner personally in order to pick up the car. Renters may have to go out of their way to retrieve the car if there is not a Turo already at the airport. 

Additionally, each renter must show the car owner his or her driver's license, which does have personal information that people may not feel comfortable sharing with a random person.

Restrictions Are Variable 

Since Turo does not own the cars, rules and regulations are inconsistent. Some owners allow renters to drive 200 miles a day, while others allow only 100. 

Each owner has his or her own set of restrictions, so Turo does not have an overall list of rules for the available cars. 

Availability Limitations

Turo does not offer cars in New York. People under 21 years of age cannot rent a car, and people under age 25 have to pay additional fees. 

In fact, people under 25 may need to demonstrate at least two years of current US licensed driving history, and potentially can only rent out certain cars because they are considered "high-risk."

Caring for the Car

One thing that is different about the Turo experience is that guests are expected to care for the car as if it were their own. So, if the exterior of the car is significantly dirtier or if it has junk food crumbles inside from a road trip, you have to take it through a car wash and vacuum it out before returning it. If not, you may be charged a cleaning fee between $30 and $250. This is a big differentiator between standard car rental companies and renting a car with Turo. 

The Bottom Line

Travelers who want a cheap or out of the ordinary rental vehicle will be satisfied with Turo's offerings. Users can choose the car model, location, and owner. 

Finding a unique rental vehicle, on the low or high-end is made easier through Turo's growing community, where owners can use this portal to the sharing economy to make some extra money.

However, keep in mind that service is not available in New York or to potential customers under age 21, and people under age 25 must pay extra fees while renting.

In an age where everyone wants to be able to control everything with their mobile device it was only a matter of time before personal car rentals became a thing. Renting exotic cars from mainstream agencies was a hassle and with so many liabilities and extra charges you never felt comfortable driving on the road. The whole experience with Turo was completely different. Looking for specific cars was a fun process and the filters were useful in narrowing down the list. We had a specific car in mind, including colour, so went searching straight for that. Everything was self explanatory and easy to follow. Having 2 different options for insurance type was nice too. Unfortunately, Turo depends on ‘non-employees’ to make sure your experience is seamless which I can imagine sometimes doesn’t happen but our experiences have been great and we’d certainly use the app and our lenders again!

Had an awesome experience renting a cool Jeep Wrangler in Houston, TX with Carlos!!! You can see from the other Turo reviews that it is all about the Owner- Good ones=Awesome Experience. Carlos was very responsive at all times and helpful. So much better than Hertz!!!! We needed a little help with the Jeep Soft Top, and he was there for us! Only reason I gave Turo 4 Stars was that the app was confusing because it required a 24-hour trip, and ours was less. I couldn't find a way to end the trip early.

The worst customer approval process. Ever. Absolute incompetence. I could not have been more patient the weeks before our trip back East, waiting for Turo to approve (actually just reapprove) me as driver. Fourteen... Count them... 14... attempts to submit my information online. Turo's application locked in driver's license issuance date. Not a big deal, right?... Emailed them copies of my driver's license... Over and over. Turo could not fix this glitch in their software, and could not manually work around, to get me approved as a driver... Result: my sister was forced to drive in rainy nightime conditions on roads she was not familiar. Terrifying for everyone. Turo failed to resolve a dangerous situation they knew about weeks in advance. Will never use them again.

They never allowed me to verify my account. I don't know if it because I'm young or because I'm not American, but clearly they didn't want me driving their cars. But instead of telling me that, they started asking for an ever-growing amount of pictures and documents every time, and every time more ridiculous. Even now that they have more personal information about me than Google, they refuse to accept me, and even to reject me, and just keep lying to my face, saying they are "working on it" and that it is "urgent". I've had enough; nothing "urgent" takes weeks.

First the car I rented wasn't available the day of my arrival, called Turo to get my car replaced and waited on hold for almost 40 minutes then I was disconnected and no one called me back. Was forced to rent a car I didn't want because I couldn't wait any longer for Turo to try and get me a replacement. Supposedly I was told I would get a 25% refund and still have not seen that from the guy who I rented the card from and Turo was suppose to give me a 50 credit I havn't seen yet either.

The app might be not bad but poor architecture design. Does not allow to have car classes so if you have more then few cars its nightmare to manage the fleet availability and pricing. Also Turo has ugly approach to the hosts. We worked with them over 1 year and then they have asked us to change our account just because we have 4.5 stars reviews while some of those negative reviews concerns to Turo rules themselves rather then our problems. They are bad and not trustworthy partners to do business.

Turo is a great option for renting a car. Instead of going to a car lot to pick up a rental you work directly with someone who wants to rent out their car. You can find some really unique vehicles to rent this way. The rental process is a little tricky but once you figure it out through the app, renting is a breeze.

I love the idea of doing everything on the app. My frustration was that when the a/c in the car didn't work, I took it back. It worked for all of 10 minutes and then it stopped again. By that time, I had to leave for work. There was no other car I could have and no one offered anything for the inconvenience. I feel like mechanical issues should be addressed before renting a vehicle to someone and if things happen, find a way to compensate renters for their trouble.

This was a very good experience mainly because I was able to get a car that I would never be able to rent from a traditional rental company for a very good price. One piece of advice, before you commit, make sure that the car is located close to where you are and/or there is a decent delivery/hand-off method. I had to Lyft 30 minutes to and from which added to the overall cost. It was my first time, so next time I will try to make sure of that.

Just pray someone never damages your car. That's when it shows how absolutely disconnected and hogwash Turo is on the back end. Absolute fiasco. Their process for claims is a mess, is disfunctional, does not make sense. F due to this.

Turo was great. I really like that I can choose my specific car instead of renting some mystery vehicle. I also like that I can rent everything from econoboxes to supercars and most are cheaper than a comparable rental would be. I would like to be able to message owners without having to pay first. An employee of mine told me about this app. I needed a car for a few days and I don't like the hassle of renting a car from an actual rental company. Usually a lot of hassles and certain time frames too. I decided to try this app out and it was great! Easy communication, app was easy to navigate, the person i rented from was very on top of it and always got back to me right away. I already have told others about this app and they have passed this along to others too!

Horrible app, horrible service. I downloaded the app, signed into a new account. When I tried to rent a car, they declined my account. When I did chat with a rep. she asked me for my last 7 years of driving record, proof of insurance, my photo holding my drivers license, photo of the card I used to pay, etc...This is just madness. Again, horrible service.

Renting the car was very easy and went well, had some problems app, couldn't get the paperwork needed for my grandson to take his driving test, besides that was a very good experience

I flew To Los Angles And It Was Easy To Get Turo Even Though I Had To Catch A Uber They Paid For It So It Was No Problem It Was A Quick Check In I Basically Got There And Pulled Right Off I Would Definitely Use Turo Again.

This was our first time using this car rental service and it was five stars all the way. Wonderful and communicative host, first class car. Everything went better than we could’ve expected at a very affordable price. I’ve already booked for our next trip !

I really like Turo. So far, my personal experience with landlords is extremely positive. They are always very friendly, flexible and comfortable in time. But my friend used Turo, and one of the owners decided to make money on it at the expense of Extras, Turo correctly solved the situation, which in the end my friend was satisfied.

If you want to host your vehicles this is a terrible mistake. The company will penalty for everything and if the customer does not want to pay tolls or tickets , TURO wont recognize the cost and will penalty you for requesting the money back !!!!!!!
