Turo, formerly Relay Rides, is a peer-to-peer car sharing company that started in San Francisco, CA in 2009. Similar to the Airbnb model, local car owners advertise and rent out their vehicles to drivers who would prefer to avoid the standard rental car experience.
The company launched nationally in March of 2012 and is currently available in over 4,500 cities and over 300 airports throughout the United States. Turo is supported by top-tier investors, including August Capital, Google Ventures, Shasta Ventures, Canaan Partners, and Trinity Ventures.
Keep reading for pros and cons, plus Turo reviews from real customers.
To cater to individual preferences, the company offers over 800 different car models to choose from. Renters can choose from cars, SUVs, minivans, trucks, convertibles, hybrids and vans. One can also filter by rental period for long-term rentals, the vehicle make, features like all-wheel drives, and more.
Turo has an easy, user-friendly, and customizable rental sign up. In order to sign up for car sharing, create a Turo account by simply signing into your Facebook or email account.
The first time you sign up for a car, all you have to do is enter some general information, choose a car, rental date, and time. You can either decline additional insurance or purchase the Basic or Premium option, each with varying physical damage and liability protection.
In order to get the car and the keys, all the renter needs to do is meet the owner and show them their driver's license. Some owners will even deliver the car right to the renter. Returning the car is simple, as the renter just needs to return the car with a tank full of gas to where it was initially picked up.
Turo rents vehicles priced approximately 35% lower than other car rental options. The price ranges depending on what car one gets. There is no membership fee and cars generally go for a flat rate of $40 a day.
In addition to rental fees, buyers may be charged fees for additional miles, parking tickets and cleaning fees. To get the car's trip price, one must multiply the relevant trip rate advertised on the vehicle by the duration. There are also the following fees:
It should also be noted that payment information, including debit card and credit card payments, are made through the Turo app or website, not the rental host.
With Turo, there are private and commercial hosts. When it comes to Turo’s insurance, owners can either use Turo’s policies or decline coverage to be eligible for a commercial, third-party insurance policy.
Declining coverage: Owners can decline Turo’s insurance coverage. This makes them considered a Commercial Host. As such, they must have their policy verified by Turo prior to renting out any of their vehicles.
Turo’s insurance offers three different tiers of protection for owners to choose from. All three plans come with $1 million in liability coverage and physical damage protection that covers the value of the car, up to $125,000. From there, the plans differ in host deductible, cost, and other amenities.
Just as you would when you rent a car with other rental car companies, before you complete your booking, you have to choose which protection plan you want for your trip.
If you choose a commercial host, then the host will provide you with options. None of the guest plans cover mechanical or interior damage.
If you already have personal insurance, Turo’s coverage will supplement your existing coverage. Policies differ in the amount of liability insurance, deductible payment required, and damage protection.
Basic Package: $3,000 deductible
Roadside assistance is available 24/7 for guests driving a vehicle covered by a Turo protection plan; however, depending on your plan, you may be charged.
Turo will pay for the dispatch fee and there is no charge for tows shorter than 15 miles in the US.
Beyond that, the party that caused the need for a tow will have to pay. Basically, if the car you are renting has a mechanical problem or an issue due to improper maintenance, the owner will have to pay, while locking the keys out or killing the battery by leaving the lights on will leave you, the renter, at fault.
Since Turo does not operate with clients out of a specific agency, it utilizes car owners that do not use their cars on an everyday basis. Renters must meet the car owner personally in order to pick up the car. Renters may have to go out of their way to retrieve the car if there is not a Turo already at the airport.
Additionally, each renter must show the car owner his or her driver's license, which does have personal information that people may not feel comfortable sharing with a random person.
Since Turo does not own the cars, rules and regulations are inconsistent. Some owners allow renters to drive 200 miles a day, while others allow only 100.
Each owner has his or her own set of restrictions, so Turo does not have an overall list of rules for the available cars.
Turo does not offer cars in New York. People under 21 years of age cannot rent a car, and people under age 25 have to pay additional fees.
In fact, people under 25 may need to demonstrate at least two years of current US licensed driving history, and potentially can only rent out certain cars because they are considered "high-risk."
One thing that is different about the Turo experience is that guests are expected to care for the car as if it were their own. So, if the exterior of the car is significantly dirtier or if it has junk food crumbles inside from a road trip, you have to take it through a car wash and vacuum it out before returning it. If not, you may be charged a cleaning fee between $30 and $250. This is a big differentiator between standard car rental companies and renting a car with Turo.

My first Turo experience was with Brian's 2017 Mustang GT. Car was in great condition and the entire process from Check-in to Check-out was hassle free. I was sceptical of how strict of an inspection would be done in the end and whether there would be expenses imposed for small reasons but that wasn't the case.
It was quick fun and easy to make without any hustle like the rental give.
I loved renting through turo *t was quick and easy the owner of the vehicle met me on time a very friendly man nice and clean vehicle .it waa great.
It was a very good experience. It was hassle free. We booked the car, paid the car online and picked it up. There was no waiting, no crazy paperwork and the host was easy to work with. Any questions he replied right back. Our host was Himilcon. I would definitely be booking with him again.
This was my first rental car from Turo. I’m very pleased how convenient it is to acquire the car with very simple instructions. It’s so user friendly. Bo was always on top of everything! Communication was excellent!
Was a great and convenient experience will definitely use Turo for my next trip.
Turo is amazing from easy to use and navigate. I will definitely use Turo Again the next time i need to rent a car
Smooth transaction. Prices we’re affordable. Everything went great.
I would NOT suggest Turos services! Here's why: I signed up for membership and all was fine, I found a car, booked and --> paid for a car, all was fine, I messaged back and forth with the host 2 hours before pick-up and all was fine, I took several buses and a train accross town to pick up the car only to find noone present at the pick-up location. I tried messaging the host but found I was unable to log into the website or the app. I found the customer service number online and called while standing outside of a parking lot where I looked very suspicious and felt very vulnerable as I was not truly able to explain why I was there since this was an informal car rental. Customer service very casually told me that my membership had been denied without reason, keeping in mind this "membership" denial came after a full booking where payment was fully collected and I'd already traveled accross town. I am still unable to find terms of "membership" during the registration process as someone else I know went through the sign up just to see. Additionally, if there was a process for membership approval, why was my money collected and a booking completely allowed BEFORE my membership was authenticated? I was told that I would receive a refund but the refund could take up to 10 business days and there is nothing I can do about it after trusting this website/app. Process, unacceptable. This is not an experience that I'd suggest anyone go through.
easy and fast to find good car..., accetable and affordable prices
It's easy to rent with Turo and the prices are extremely reasonable.
Easy pick up and drop off. Easy to communicate with host.
A great option in car rentals. Painless and in someways easier than traditional car rentals.
I'm an All-star host and a renter through Turo for years. I simply love the concept of being able to find cars that you can't find traditionally at RACs and most times at much more reasonable prices too!
Do not rent cars that require Bluetooth if you need to take cars into areas with poor or no cell reception
This is the first time I'm using turo.the process is easy. I'm very satisfied with the service.
We recently rented a 2006 Toyota Siena on Turo. The car was NOT as advertised on the host's profile. The car was in terrible condition. We are very turned off by our experience and never plan to rent from Turo again. When I called Turo customer support after our trip, they would not do anything to make this right. Very disappointed in their customer service. Car was advertised as "The Sienna is smooth and clean! Great tires and maintained! The sienna has every option available including GPS and back up camera." We understand the car was a 2006, which meant it was likely to have a lot of miles, but the description and car pictures were very misleading on the car's condition. We would have never rented this vehicle if we knew how bad of condition it was really in. ISSUE #1: the car was disgusting on the inside. The carpets were gross, cup holders were sticky, stains everywhere, torn seat cushions. ISSUE #2: there was no GPS or backup camera on the car as advertised ISSUE #3: The tires were not in good condition as advertised - the front two tires were bald tires and was a threat to our safety ISSUE #4: The "maintenance required" and "low tire pressure" lights were on the entire trip. ISSUE #5: The passenger sliding door was very hard to open and close. It took a lot of pulling to get it to open/close. ISSUE #6: The car smelled of bad fumes when running ISSUE #7: We scheduled to pickup the car on 8/1, but the owner dropped the car off two days early and made us pay $21 to get it out of parking. ISSUE #8: We paid an additional $90 to borrow three of his carseats, but one of the seats was not what we requested. We asked for a convertible car seat but he gave us an infant carseat, that didn't have the right weight requirements for my child, which endangered our child's life. ISSUE #9: The front headlight covers were very foggy and made it hard to see at night. ISSUE #10: Trunk liftgate support (passenger side) would come off when opening the trunk, which made the trunk close and hit our head. The liftgate was able to be re-attached, but it kept happening. At one point in our trip, we felt like we should not drive where we wanted to go because we were worried the car was not going to get us there safely. Before we left on our trip, my husband and I were touting how awesome our Turo experience was last time. We referred several people to Turo before our trip. But after this recent experience, we don't ever plan to rent from Turo again and will not be recommending Turo to our friends anymore.
I spent about an hour on an online chat with someone sending a ton of requested documentation, including having to take a selfie with my driver's license and sending the license separately. I even had to spend money to get my driving history printout from the DMV website. I am insured and I have an excellent driving history. However, they still denied letting me rent a car at a time when my car was broken and I really needed it. On top of that, they would not give me an explanation. The customer service person told me I would have to contact someone on chat and then the chat person told me I would have call customer service. No one could get me a supervisor. Nothing about all of this makes any sense.
Excellent! We had issues with the cars’ fob key and your representative knew exactly what was needed to make it work. Your representative responded immediately. I felt very much supported and not deserted.
it was a great experience. I thank Turo for giving me the opportunity to be able to ride in cars i cannot afford haha. Everything went well super smoothly. Amazing guest service.
Visiting Seattle to celebrate my son's 33 birthday- I could not afford to rent a car through a rental company- then I remembered Turo! I'm so glad I did. It was so easy to pick up and return. I highly recommend Turo!
Initially it was going smooth but after a few rides i notice the reimbursement for miles and cleaning fee is outrageous!! I can honestly say i wont be using Turo ever again! Went from 140 “1day” rental to 400 that is ridiculous. I’d rather deal with the name brand rental than to deal with”reimbursement”.
I was rear ended by a Turo driver on the 405 in LA . The driver stated she had insurance, however Geico is refusing to pay since it was a Turo rental. Turo is insured by Liberty Mutual and they are refusing to pay since they state Geico should pay; I have had very little help from Turo. Do not get hit by a Turo rental car as the Insurance companies do not want to pay. Turo is not helpful. How they are allowed to do business in California I have no idea. I will be writing the Insurance Commissioner.
The value of using Turo is excellent. Imir was on time and the exchange was flawless.
When I rented a vehicle from Turo, another driver WITH insurance hit the car when I wasn't even in it and Turo charged me over $700, then refunded it. Now they are taking me to collections for that $700 again because the other driver's insurance cannot get in contact with their customer and they won't claim responsibility. I would NOT recommend Turo to my worst enemy.
It was quick and easy. I loved the experience and will be using it again in the future.
I had a rental cancelled by the "Four Star" owner 36 hours before my scheduled arrival because the vehicle was broken down. I had asked several weeks prior that I be advised if issues arose, but he gave no indication of any problems, even though I learned that it had broken down a week before. He only let me know about this after I sent him my arrival information and phone number so he could let me know where to meet to pick up the vehicle. There was not a thing I could do about this. You have NO recourse but to scramble for another rental if this happens. There's no corporate accountability or policy.
I had been talking about possibly buying a Porsche for some time, so for my birthday my kids rented one for me through Touro. It was a beautiful car and we had a great time driving it.
I rented a car using Turo in San Francisco. I will NEVER use Turo again. I was charged a fine for not vacuuming the car out even though Turo's own policy says that the renter can't be charged for a small amount of crumbs in the car that can easily be vacuumed out. Beware of the fine print when renting from Turo and I would advise against using them.
We had a great first time experience with Turo. Cal accommodate our needs. We will definitely rent through Turo again and with Cal when we make our next trip back to Seattle.
We are a family of six who recently traveled to Salt Lake City, UT from Maine. When shopping for a rental car, we were unable to find a deal online, as we were sized out of the standard sedan option (due to the sixth passenger). I was chatting with my mom about our situation, and she remembered a friend using Turo in Salt Lake City previously. I contacted her friend to hear about her experience and decided to give Turo a try! I am so happy that we used Turo as our rental car option! We saved a ton of money and had a great ride while visiting Utah. The person we rented from was amazing and went above in beyond to ensure that our rental experience was fantastic! I will definitely use Turo again in the future when traveling!
I enjoyed the owner. H was kind and understanding. Car had some problems.
Great experience!!! Will use it again. Super easy to use, very organized.
more filters on car selection - ie airport delivery (no charge or charge less than $25) overall my experience was great - very easy, informative and timely. I returned my car early (confirmed with owner - no problem). Even though I followed the return procedure on the Turo app, it didn't reflect that the car was returned nor a receipt issued right away which I would expect. It was only after the original return time that I received notification. I'd prefer to know all is complete - esp as I was headed to the airport and had no recourse or opportunity to address missing info.
Overall, it was much less than going with a traditional car rental company. We had a good host so we were provided with a step by step as far as where to go and what to do once we arrived at the airport and once it was time to drop off the car. I will say that it's important to factor in the additional tax that some host charge because the tax will cause your overall cost to be a little higher than what you are seeing. Also, know that you will be asked to share your personal ID with the host, this was strange for us particularly since we weren't given any personal or business info for them, so that's something to keep in mind and be sure you're comfortable with. Lastly, pay attention to the mileage on the car that your getting, because that will affect the way the car drives long-distance or in areas where there are lots of hills.
Love it always my first choice for quality - convenience -affordability and punctuality
This was my first time using Turo and I LOVE it! I’m never renting from the regular rental agencies again. It’s like Airbnb for cars. Easy to use, and very convenient for wherever you are from just being in town and needing a vehicle or arriving at the airport, it’s great! Very affordable as well!
Everything was well organized and we were accommodated well even though last minute one host cancelled on us.
Booking was smooth, everything went well
This is my first Turo rental. I was a bit hesitant to go with Turo at first, but found everything was laid out very well..charged were easily understood and I felt upfront. I was fortunate in that I had a great host. I look forward future trips
I made an account with them recently. Spent quite some time looking through my options over a couple days, reading reviews of hosts, etc. I finally booked a reservation and everything seemed okay. I ended up discovering that I could get a discounted rental with Alamo through my Costco membership, so I booked that. I signed into my Turo account to cancel the trip, and it said "You cancelled your trip 20 hours ago." I definitely had not cancelled my trip in the middle of the night when I was sleeping, so I contacted them thinking that my account was hacked. Then I decided to see if I had an email with a timestamp, and I did in fact have an email from them saying that the car I chose was no longer available and the reservation had been cancelled and a refund was in process. It did not say whether Turo or the host cancelled it. I went back into their support center and sent another message to disregard my concern about being hacked. An hour later, I got an email that my account had been closed with no explanation at all. I googled this to see if it had happened to anyone else... shockingly, there are multiple reports of discrimination by Turo. A host even said that he used Turo for months before he uploaded a photo, and his account was randomly closed within weeks of uploading the photo, despite having all 5-star reviews! I did upload a photo and I am a minority. I have no criminal record, no tickets in the last 4 years (only one EVER), no accidents, and I am a government employee with a security clearance so I am confident that there is some form of discrimination going on because there is NO other reason for this. Multiple reviews/complaints that I read online about Turo said that they blatantly tell people that they do not disclose their account review process. I am EXTREMELY leery of this company having my information. I entered my driver's license, my home address, my credit card info... and they just randomly closed my account? It seems incredibly suspicious. I am waiting to make sure I get my refund of $160! Luckily I used my Amex to book this, so I will contact them for a dispute if I have to. DO NOT TRUST TURO.
I rented a car for my daughters birthday from Brian. He was very nice and professional. The price was very reasonable and the car was in great shape. The experienced was as good as promised and I would definitely recommend.
It was a great convenient app. Easy to navigate and utilize.
My car was repossessed during my rental period
This poorly qualified company spent an hour of my time attempting to refund a charge that was not in the Turo System. Turo charged me 45 dollars on August 8th. The specialist stated that he was going to escalate the ticket and is requesting information that was already given. I spent an hour of my time trying to rectify this that was in no way my fault or my doing. I requested compensation for my time, which is valuable, but he did not give compensation. Turo is terrible and will not be using them again.
Booking was easy and convenient. However, The policies regarding late returns are not explicitly explained. Responsive time is very long, and Turo does not answer calls. Tip: Make sure you change returning time to show accurate turn time. In the future I will be very careful to use this app again.
Went to Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ to spend some time at a Hip Hop Convention and some time relaxing with the family. I've always wanted to drive a Tesla and see how feasible it would be to have one of my own. After searching Tesla rentals, Turo was the first site to come up. I was a bit skeptical at first but started reading reviews from customers because I've never heard of Turo before. I thought I'd give it a try. Turo is the AirBnB for cars. I rented a Tesla Model S from a Tesla owner. He dropped the car off at the airport where we met. He showed me everything I needed to know to drive the vehicle and made sure I was comfortable and good to go before he left since I've never say in a Tesla before. I'm now shopping for one and plan on purchasing a Tesla within the next year.
Turo won't even let me rent anything. Denied my application. Great credit score, never used it before, 30 years old, never had an insurance claim, valid license and credit card, verified with profile pic and everything and they STILL won't let me rent. Makes absolutely no sense. Garbage company and waste of your time. Don't bother.
My first time using Turo was good! I had a great car from a very kind owner. He dropped the car off in short term parking and I dropped it back upon my return. The fear of the unknown was present but it turned out to be a very pleasant experience.
The car was great . The pick up and drop off were both very easy . Dennis was very helpful and understanding throughout the entire process. I’ll definitely book with him again when I’m back in town .
