LAST UPDATED: June 27th, 2019

Started in 2016, ReachNow is BMW’s car-sharing service, currently available in two cities: Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon. It was previously available in Brooklyn, New York, but the service has been suspended.

This is a free-floating service, meaning that you don’t have to pick up and return rentals to the same parking spaces.

Download the mobile app to apply. Most customers are approved and can start reserving cars within just a few minutes. You do have to enter your U.S. driver’s license and a debit or credit card. Prepaid debit cards are not accepted.

ReachNow Eligibility

  • Must be at least 21 with two years of driving experience
  • Have a valid US driver’s license
  • Have a good driving record with no major violations or accidents

ReachNow Costs

  • One-time, non-refundable sign up fee: $15
  • Costs include insurance, parking in the Home Area, and gas (for trips under 24 hours):
    • $0.45 per minute
    • $15 per hour
    • $50 for three hours
    • $80 per day for up to five days ($400)
  • If you are going into the store, just choose Keep Car and it puts your rate at $.1 per minute
  • Mileage over the daily 400-mile cap: $0.45 per mile
  • $1 Shared Asset Fee for each trip for cleaning
  • Any tolls or express lane fees will be billed to you
  • $5 to pick up or drop off a vehicle at the airport parking

Rates include gas for trips under 24 hours. When you are selecting a car, the fuel or charge range is displayed. If you choose a car that won’t get you where you need to go, then members are responsible for refueling for trips under 24 hours.

BMW has a service staff that refuels and recharges cars throughout the day. The company requests that members return cars with at least five miles of range left. There is a $100 fee if you return it with less.

If you reserve for more than 24 hours, then the first fill-up is reimbursed by ReachNow. Save your receipt and email a photo of it to member support. You will get a reimbursement check within the month.

ReachNow Insurance
ReachNow car sharing insurance only covers state-mandated minimums:

  • Washington
    • $30,000 per person
    • $60,000 per accident
    • $10,000 property damage
  • Oregon
    • $25,000 per person
    • $50,000 per accident
    • $20,000 property damage

If you are found at-fault for an accident, you are responsible for a $1,000 damage fee, unless you opt for the ReachNow Protect damage waiver for $9 per month or $90 per year.

Once you choose the vehicle, it is reserved for only 30 minutes. If you miss your reservation, you can’t access that same car for another two hours.

Vehicle Access

Cars can be accessed via the mobile app or your Membership Key Card. After you sign up, you are prompted to enter your mailing address so they can send you the membership card which helps you access ReachNow cars even when you don’t have cell phone service.

While car sharing is available in both markets, ReachNow also offers a Ride service in Seattle, the company’s primary market. Rides are given in BMW 3 Series and X1 SAVs, are driven by uniformed, professional drivers, and can be reserved up to a week in advance. They are available from 6 AM to midnight every day except Friday and Saturday nights, which offer extended service until 2 AM.

Within the app, you can set your preferences for the radio station, cabin temperature, and even a Quiet Mode, if you aren't in the mood for chit chat.

It is free to sign up and prices are consistent throughout the day — BMW’s answer to Uber and Lyft surge pricing. Here is a breakdown:

  • Base trip $3.24 (including tax and fees)
  • $0.4 per minute
  • $2.40 per mile

The Good

  • Premium Cars
  • Referral Program
  • Car Sharing Club

Premium Cars

As much as people joke about driving around a Kia from a rental company, this service should appeal to the same group that loves to rent from SilverCar.

Even though a variety of vehicles are available, they all cost the same. It is a great way to give a premium, diverse experience while offering a simple pricing structure.

Portland: 360 Vehicle Fleet

  • BMW X1
  • BMW 3 Series
  • BMW i3
  • Mini Cooper (only) 2 door
  • Mini Clubman

Seattle: 700 Vehicle Fleet

  • BMW X1
  • BMW 3 Series
  • BMW i3
  • Mini Cooper
  • Mini Clubman

The X1 is a crossover SUV, the 3 Series is a standard sedan, while the Mini options offer some fun in-town driving and the i3 will give you an electric experience, complete with a range extender.

All models come fully loaded with the following bells and whistles:

  • Navigation
  • Heated seats
  • Bluetooth/USB connections for audio
  • Moon roof
  • Premium finishes
  • Rear view camera
  • LED headlamps

Referral Program

Members can use ReachNow’s referral program to earn credits by referring a friend with a special link, sent from the Free Trips section of your app. Your friend will get $20 for their first drive and you will get $20 credit on your account after they complete their first drive.

Car Sharing Club

There are a couple of great things to highlight about ReachNow’s car sharing club. The first is the daily mileage cap. While this service does list a mileage cap, it is at 400 miles. Other car sharing services put their daily mileage cap at 180 miles (ZipCar) or 200 miles (Getaround). ReachNow actually allows you to travel quite a distance before their per-mile rate kicks in.

Additionally, for in-town drivers, gas or charge is included in your rate. However, if you are planning to take the car out of town (on a 24+ hour rental), the first fill-up can be reimbursed. Just save your receipt and email it to customer support.

The Bad

  • Fees
  • Rental Limit
  • Limited Service Area

As with most car-sharing services, there are fees for smoking or bringing a non-crated pet:

  • Pets: Min. $50 & max of cost of cleaning + $25 fee
  • Smoking: same

There are also fees for leaving less than five miles worth of gas.

Rental Limit

With ReachNow, the max rental period is five days. This isn’t very flexible when it comes to out of town road trips.

Limited Service Area

This service seems like a great way to easily have access to BMW’s luxury cars. Unfortunately, services are only currently available in Seattle (RideNow Drive and RideNow Ride) and Portland (RideNow Drive).

The Bottom Line

The mobility services division of the BMW group is starting small, with only two current car sharing markets available in the United States. The service offers premium car sharing with bells and whistles like heated seats, on-screen navigation, and backup cameras. With gas, insurance, and parking included, this is a great way to ride in style while avoiding the cost of ownership.

We are especially interested to follow the pilot ride-hailing program, ReachNow Ride to see how it stacks up against competitors.
