Buick is a well-established premium car division under General Motors (GM). Buick began its long history of automotive manufacturing with the production of the Buick Model B in 1903. Buick’s ties with GM started when William Durant, a previous Buick manager and major investor, went on to establish GM in 1908. Drivers from China to the United States enjoy the luxurious interior and smooth performance of Buick vehicles.

Buick has a long reputation for reliability. The automaker has earned several J.D. power awards and ranks in the top half of all major car brands. Buick cars largely appeal to those seeking a luxury feel in a reasonable price range. The vehicle lineup includes SUVs and SUV crossovers.

A new Buick ranges from $24,195–$55,000 MSRP depending on the model and trim level.

The Good

  • Established Car Brand
  • Standard Warranty Offering
  • Good Reliability Ratings
  • Advanced Vehicle Technology

Established Car Brand

Founded in 1903, Buick is one of the oldest car brands in the United States. The automotive company has a long history of continued innovation and product success. Customers looking for a trusted car brand should consider Buick for its brand reputation.

Standard Warranty Offering

The Buick Protection Program provides warranty coverage for new Buick vehicles. The protection program comes with one free maintenance visit that must be used within the first year of ownership. The maintenance visit includes an oil change, vehicle inspection, and tire rotation.

Owners can visit any authorized GM facility to redeem their free maintenance service. Customers should keep in mind that some car brands offer three to five years of free maintenance service.

The Buick factory warranty comes with three years or 36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage and five years or 60,000 miles for powertrain coverage. This warranty length and coverage are standard across major car brands. New Buick owners don’t have to worry about a deductible if they encounter a problem in the first three to five years. The new vehicle warranty can also be transferred to a new owner if you decide to sell within the first few years.

Good Reliability Ratings

Customers can expect comfort and reliability from a Buick car. According to Repairpal, the average cost for repairs and maintenance is around $608 for Buick vehicles. Buick’s average repair cost is lower than the average repair cost across all car models. The frequency of repair shop visits averages about once every three years. This is also lower than the average of all other car models.

Some reviews on BestCompany.com have also mentioned reliability and ease of maintenance as benefits of choosing Buick.

“We had a Buick car growing up and it was a wonderful car to drive. It was reliable and got us where we needed to be.”

The one drawback to Buick’s repair stats is the average severity of the repair. According to Repairpal, when a Buick car does need to be repaired, the problem tends to be more costly or complicated than the average car repair among all major car brands.

In 2021, Buick’s reliability ranking on Consumer Reports jumped from fourteenth place to fourth place because of the recent Buick Encore update. The Buick Encore 2021 received a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA with a perfect rating on front and side crash tests. The Buick Enclave and Buick Envision have also received five-star ratings. With these third-party safety ratings, prospective customers can feel added reassurance that a Buick vehicle will keep them and their passengers safe.

Advanced Vehicle Technology Options

Buick is a premium brand that offers luxury features within a more affordable price range. New Buick models come with standard safety features and in-vehicle entertainment systems. The standard trim includes antilock disc brakes, an electronic stability control system, LED daytime lamps, 10 airbags, seatbelts, OnStar availability, rear vision camera, door locks, cruise control, and tire pressure monitoring system.

If you want to upgrade to a better safety package, Buick offers forward collision alert, parking assist, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, and side blind spot monitoring. These safety features are available with most major car brands.

The Buick infotainment system is equipped with Apple Carplay and Android auto. Customers can add a wireless smartphone charging station and a rear camera mirror. Some models and trims come with a Yelp Reservations app for quick restaurant reservations. Parents can use the teen driving app to monitor their child’s driving habits and set appropriate limits to reduce distractions.

The Bad

  • Limited Vehicle Variety

Limited Vehicle Variety

Buick keeps a lean vehicle lineup featuring only SUVs and SUV crossovers. The following vehicle models and trims are available as a new Buick in 2021:

  • Encore
  • Encore GX
  • Encore GX ST
  • All-New Envision
  • All-New Envision Avenir
  • Enclave
  • Enclave Avenir

If you are seeking a sedan, you can check into the certified pre-owned options.

Buick also does not offer any 2021 hybrid or electric vehicle models in the United States. GM recently released concept vehicles for a new Buick EV model. GM plans to release 20 new electric vehicles across its different divisions including Buick, GMC, and Chevrolet by 2023.

I own a 2006 Buick Enclave. I actually love my car. It drives so well (actually a little too well and I find myself speeding because the drive is so smooth). There were a few issues with the Captain chairs making a weird sound. However, we took it into the Buick Dealer and they were able to fix it.

Buick knows how to build a luxury car that that's affordable! It feels like your sitting in a Lazy-Boy chair while your driving and they are also extremely quiet.

All factory parts do not last long and seems to be of low quality, I have replaced all speakers, sensors, hoses, water pump, radiator, stabilizers, transmission plate, motor mounts and my catalytic converter engine light has been on for about 2 years.

We inherited an old Buick when my grandmother died. It has run beautifully! We’ve never had major issues yet, and they are super comfy to drive in!

The Buick we owned was great. It was comfortable to ride in and was made of quality materials inside and out. It was dependable and drove well in our snowy winter weather.

I am on a Buick encore and I love the bucket seats in the beautiful leather but the engine seems to be missing as you turn to go up the hill.
