Amazon Appstore nearing 400k apps

Move over, App Store! There's possibly a new giant in town.

Even though Amazon is behind the Google Play store and Apple App Store, each with 1.2 million apps in their stores, respectively, it certainly is catching up. CNET reports that app numbers are up for Amazon's 4-year-old store, with over 400,000 apps currently circulating for Amazon's Fire tablets and smartphones.

Here's how the Appstore keeps crushing it in downloads and how they can work a little harder to catch up with the top two tech giants:

  • Amazon is missing Google apps (like mail and Clash of Clans apps, which are huge power apps in both the Google Play store and Apple's App Store.
  • The store catalog doubled in the last year mostly due to Amazon coins - virtual currency that provides discounts for app purchases. Amazon also offers a free daily app program - akin to Apple's App of the Week - that has spurred numbers.
  • Analysts say if the Fire phone was more popular, the Amazon Appstore would gain popularity as well.

Amazon is also trying to up their numbers through their attendance at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Spain, according to VentureBeat. With games driving 75% income on Apple's App Store and 90% income on the Google Play store, Amazon hopes wooing game developers to develop for the Fire phones and tablets will help give them the push they need to play ball with Apple and Google.
