The Good

idTrue has found ways to make their company stand out among other people search engines. Although they have only been in business a couple of years they have used that time to find out what their customers really want and how to best make their search engine unique.

  • Public and criminal record search
  • Low cost
  • Many screening services

Most people search engines give a broad list of ways and reasons their search engine can be used. Looking to find property owned, previous and current address, employment, and other things are generally on each list at various people search engines. However, idTrue has found a way to make their people search engine unique by specifying their searches as not only public record searches but more specifically criminal record searches. idTrue uses their reports to mainly focus on criminal convictions and backgrounds as well as the other general information normally provided on reports. At idTrue any person who purchases a report can find criminal records, sex offender status, evictions, bankruptcy, marriage and divorce filings, traffic violations and other criminal documentations.

The cost at idTrue is both a negative and positive benefit. While the cost for reports and memberships seem to be low, there do not seem to be many options to choose from when selecting what membership subscription best fits a customers needs. When a customer requests a report at idTrue, they are given some information for free to confirm that they have the right individual before purchasing their report. The report must be purchased with a one month unlimited subscription for $29.95. As compared to other people search engines that is a relatively low monthly cost. However, that seems to be the only option available to receive full background reports. There are no other options to select a longer subscription or for a one-time report purchase.

Like most people background checks, idTrue uses public records to gather all of their data. Of those public records the most common at idTrue include federal records, county, state, and city records. This is because their background checks focus on the criminal activity of an individual. Using public records is a great way to gather a lot of information and put it all into one organized report. Although anyone can access public government records, customers generally do not want to go through all of this hassle themselves and are willing to pay for the convenience of a detail report at their fingertips in seconds.

The Bad

Unfortunately, there seems a few areas of concern with idTrue. This is probably due the fact that they are a new company in the people search industry and are still refining their search process.

  • No free trial offered
  • Limited customer support
  • Not a Consumer Reporting Agency

Similar to the cost at idTrue, the fact that there is no free trial period offered is unfortunate. For most customers it’s a nice benefit that many look for when choosing which background check company to purchase a report from. With the purchasing options at idTrue being so limited and not having a lot to offer their customer in this area, a free trial would be very beneficial to customers. Customers are only able to select a one month unlimited reports purchasing option for $29.95 even if they only want one report, or if they want to sign up for a longer period of time. A free trial would help customers know if that one month membership was something they wanted to commit to or not.

Many online backgrounds check companies offer multiple ways for their customers to contact their customer service department. Generally those ways include by phone, email, chat, or even mail. At idTrue only one option is available to talk to the customer support staff and that is by phone. Only a phone number is listed on the website for any questions or concerns and that phone line has specific operating hours, Monday through Friday 6am to 6pm pacific time. Any questions or concern from customers outside of that time frame and no one is available to help them. An email service, or an online chat could greatly help idTrue’s customers be able to reach them more efficiently.

Like some other people search engines, they are not a Consumer Reporting Agency as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. This means they do not provide consumer or credit reports and their search engine cannot be used to determine someone’s eligibility for credit, insurance, employment, or any other reason as defined and regulated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

The Bottom Line

idTrue is a relatively new business in the background check industry and has worked hard at making their company unique against their competitors. They have done this by specifying their background reports to include any and all criminal records for an individual. These criminal records could include sex offender status, bankruptcy, marriage and divorce filings, traffic violations, or any other public record. They have low costs for their one-month unlimited reports subscription of $29.95, although this is the only purchasing option for their reports. They do not offer a free trial period. idTrue is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act and as such are limited in the ways their background reports can be used. The company is just starting out and has a long way to go to figure out how to best benefit their customers.

Saw the reviews, and gave it a shot. The product was straightforward to use and located my old college roommates phone number and email address. I called into customer service, they answered quickly, and even offered me a discount, but I canceled my account. For 9.95 it was worth it.

Called into customer service, they answered right away, and the woman was very nice. After running a couple background reports, I canceled my account with ease.

The other reviewers are right. This company not only refuses to deliver reports but they NEVER remove your information. They are a sleazy scam just like the other people search engines. They have duplicate profiles of everyone on their site. Their “opt-out” feature does nothing. Your idtrue “profile” will still appear in google searches and on idtrue’s site as well. Calling them is a waste of time, they pretend supervisors don’t exist there and play dumb. There IS something you can do about it and you don’t need to hire a lawyer. You HAVE to contact your state’s attorney general or governor’s office which will have a consumer complaint division. There you just have to type in the complaint and the state will investigate. You also NEED to submit a complaint through the FTC.
The FTC and state governments will file a lawsuit against those idiots when enough complaints are received by their offices. They did it with directv among others and it was only because enough people spoke up. Idtrue doesn’t care that stalking victims requests to opt out are ignored!

I agree! I have set up in my calendar to periodically check my name on-line. When found, I call the company to tell them to remove! I understand it is all public information. But rather than let someone anonymously search on-line, make them go to the courthouse and have a face to face documented request! I too was told I need a court order to have removed. “No PII is listed. Your SSN is not listed.” IDIOT girl!!! Name; address; date of birth; variations of names used are ALL PIII! For someone who has experienced having my PII hacked, this totally pisses me off! I cannot believe more people are not irate and I cannot believe this company is getting away with this. They are putting us all at the mercy of criminals.

IDTrue is a terrible terrible company.

They do not allow anyone to delete information even if it is incorrect.

They do not allow anyone to delete their information or opt out of having it listed even if they are a victim of domestic violence or some other crime. They put people’s lives in danger by not allowing an opt out for victims of crime. Such an opt out is actually required by law.

Everyone needs to get together and file a lawsuit to obtain a court order to shut down this website since it is a menace.

I will post more about who is actually behind this company as soon as I find it. The fact they hide via domainsbyproxy is a clear indication they are a scam company and not above board.

IDTrue does not provide an opt-out. My deceased father is on this site, & they will not remove any info. Those concerned abt privacy will find an obstacle here. BTW I removed my name from as many people search sites as I could find. I don’t know how IDTrue came up with the info.

They had me linked to an X boyfriend who I was with for 4 months – 15 years ago! They don’t provide an opt out so I emailed and got no response. I called and the girl there told me I needed an EXPUNGEMENT to remove my information from their site. The need for a court ordered document is RIDICULOUS. I reported them to the FTC and all the sudden I got a response to my email where they LIED and said “as we told you previously…” when they hadn’t responded to any email at all.

They do not acknowledge opt out request. They publish private information about children under the age of 13. Anyone who has a problem with this site should complain to the FTC. Their background report are inaccurate and inflammatory.

No online Opt Out policy – am always fishy of companies that are reluctant to provide an easy opt out policy esp considering their business is to publicly expose peoples address and details which most people may not want…this business itself across the states by all companies not just idtrue is condemnable that by a quick search a persons entire profile can be gleaned right down to his street address..

DO NOT WAST YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!! THEY ARE THE WORST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was only trying to find an address of a friend to mail a birthday gift. I have the friends address, but did not know the apartment number. The report never downloaded with any information. I called customer support which was a complete wast of my time!!!!!!!! I explained I did not receive the report and requested a refund. this was just 10 minutes after signing up with the service on-line. The representative REFUSED to provide a refund. The representative kept me on the call for 45 minutes and repeatedly asked me to re-boot my computer 6 times. I explained to him that after I entered the name of the person I was looking for a page appeared asking me for more credit card information. He just kept asking me to re-set my computer. He said he thought there was a browser problem. I explained to him that I work in IT for a major corporation and that the computer is not the problem, a browser problem ” might” cause the information to maybe not download, but a browser will not ask for more credit card information. The representative was the absolute rudest I have ever experienced and refused to get me a manager as I had requested. The most wasted money I have EVER spent!!!!!!!!!
