If the quantity of books is the most important ranking factor, the cost for one of those books is the second. Many audiobook sites price their items differently: some charge a membership fee, some charge per book, and some don’t charge anything at all. If a company is honest about their pricings and has competitive pricing, they will receive high rankings in this category.

One of the most important things you can rank an audiobook company on is their selection. While it’s important to have popular and new novels available on your site, we also like to see more specialized books that people will be searching for. The more audiobooks a company has available, the higher their ranking.

5%Ways to Listen

In this category, we look at the number of ways you can listen to your audiobook. These ways include downloading, streaming, or burning to audio CD.


While most American-based audiobook companies only offer books in English, there are some that offer books in other languages. In this category, we list the number of languages an audiobook company provides content in. The more languages they offer books in, the higher their score.

8%Available Apps

This category looks at the number of platforms you can listen to on your audiobook on. Most companies that offer audiobooks allow customers to listen on Apple and Android devices. Others platforms include web browsers, CDs, and tablets.

6%Trial Period

We appreciate companies that let customers try out their product for free before signing up. Many audiobook companies offer a free 30-day trial, 15-day trial, or one audiobook. While this is not a huge factor in our rankings, we do think it’s an important thing for companies to offer. Those with longer trials receive higher scores in this category.

Most of the audiobook companies we reviewed have apps available for iOS and Android. These apps are designed to make listening via mobile phone easier. In fact, most customers use their smartphones to listen to their audiobooks. This is why it’s so important to have a high functioning, user-friendly app. In this category, we look at the average rating (number of stars) users give an audiobook app in the Apple or Windows store.

We show you the grade rating given to companies by the BBB. Even though it isn't a perfect reflection of the company, it does give you an idea of how others perceive them.

This site is designed to let consumers share their experiences. Given our expertise in many industries and the knowledge that we have gained over the years, we know that some of the most important opinions come from real customers. That is why we have allocated so much of our overall rating to the voice of our validated customer reviews. The Consumer Reviews Score is broken down into three metrics:
  1. The Average User Score
  2. Total Number of Reviews
  3. Total Number of Reviews in the last 12 months
These 3 metrics not only help us understand what consumers are saying, they also help us gain an understanding of volume and recency. All of which are critical to understanding the value of a company in the eyes of the consumer. Note: this is different from the user score that is displayed on each company profile. The "user score" that is publicly displayed is the average of all user scores published for a given profile.
User Review Moderation
In order to prevent fake and misleading user reviews, BestCompany.com has a review moderation team specifically assigned to moderating all user reviews for all companies listed on the site. This team follows a very specific and strict moderation process that has been designed by gathering learnings from mistakes other major review sites have made in the past. This moderation process involves a “flag” system where a flag is assessed for each negative attribute associated with a user review. Too many flags result in a disapproval of a user review. Some of the things our moderation staff looks for and assigns potential flags to include:
  • Email address verification of the user
  • IP address duplication and region check
  • User review semantic verification
  • Is the user an employee of the organization?
  • Is the user associated with a competitor of the organization?
  • Foul language of any kind
  • Relevance of the content pertaining to the company and the review
As you can probably tell, we take our user review moderation process very seriously. We believe accuracy and authenticity is critical when it comes to user reviews, and as a result we are constantly finding new ways to evolve our user moderation process to make it better.
