Librophile offers a simple interface for finding completely legal free audiobooks and eBooks. Their ultimate aim is to provide a place where you can find all the audiobooks and eBooks out there. By using free and often open source tools such as Backbone.S, jQuery, jPlayer, Apache, and MySQL, Librophile is able to maintain a free and competitive service.

Librophile has a library of over 100,000 digital books, but only a handfull of these are audiobooks. Librophile also has a selection of audiobooks and eBooks that are free.

Librophile pulls their content from several sources:

The Good

It is so easy! You can browse the latest books, search by keywords or choose more broadly by genre or language. You can easily listen to chapters online, download a whole book, play a sample or subscribe using iTunes. Librophile is available on desktop and your mobile phone. They have some of the latest thinking in responsive website design which means they have a single build that adapts to best fit almost every platform including the iPhone, iPad, and desktop machines.

Librophile is continuously being updated. There are servers searching for free audiobooks and eBooks to add to the database.

One thing that sets Librophile apart from other companies is their search feature. While you can search by title and author like other books, you can also search by description. Simply write down what you remember about the book and search that way. Similar sites don’t offer this function.

The Bad

Librophile is not rated by the Better Business Bureau, and they are not accredited. To be accredited by the BBB, a business must apply for accreditation and the BBB must determine that the business meets BBB accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints. This makes questions begin to emerge. Why have they not applied? Would they not pass the standards?

There are a few other things to look out for when using Librophile:

  • Some of the books they offer for cost can reach up to $50.
  • You can only download books – you cannot stream them from the internet.
  • There are no apps for Librophile. You have to listen on web browsers, or, after you download them, you can put them in your music library.

The Bottom Line

Librophile offers free audio books that are quick and easy to download. They have one of the largest varieties of free audio books. They continually look for books they do not have to add to this hub of audio books. They are not in the Better Business Bureau, but they do offer free books so you can try it out to see if you like the service.
