Trend Micro was founded in 1988 in the U.S. and is now headquartered in Tokyo. The company is run by over 5,000 employees, 1,200 of which are considered “threat experts” stationed around the world. Trend Micro's computer protection solutions are powered by cloud-based global threat intelligence. Its cloud-based infrastructure provides fast protection against threats and minimizes the risk associated with malware attacks.
- Great technology
- Cloud protection
- Mobile security
The technology behind the product is effective because it analyzes data based on its file source (URL or domain) rather than just on its content (code or hash). Results published by the independent testing lab Veszprog last year show that Trend Micro blocked 72% of threats at their source-while still in the cloud-versus competitors averaging 26 percent of threats blocked. Plus, with cloud protection, files do not need to be downloaded or scanned on your PC, preserving your computer's bandwidth and computing resources. The cloud-based technology used by Trend Micro might just beat out the traditional, yet effective, methods of scanning at the content level for signature viruses and behaviors.
Trend Micro offers excellent mobile security protection. The premium package is pricier than other mobile apps ($29.99/year), but the comprehensive coverage justifies the cost. The app for Android includes social network protection, theft prevention, safe surfing, a virus scanner, and parental control settings. An app for iPhone and iPad will be available soon. Other extra antivirus product features include an online master password manager and safe file storage.
- Firewall is not their own
- No data shredder
Trend Micro's antivirus products have most of the features needed for a good program, but they do not come with their own firewall, as do many competitors. Instead, a firewall booster is included to provide additional protection to the Windows 8 firewall. Trend Micro doesn't offer a data shredder, either, though the antivirus packages can erase chat histories and other files.
The Bottom Line
Though they don't yet offer a perfect product, Trend Micro's data mining antivirus technologies are worth investing in. But make sure your computer already has a firewall, because that's one security feature that every PC should have.
