The Good

  • Different versions
  • Easy installation
  • Automatic virus scan

Lookout has a few different versions of its software. The Premium version has all the bells and whistles you'll want and need to protect your Smartphone. One attractive feature is that with Lookout, there is a browsing tool that will warn you anytime you're about to go to a malicious website known for causing problems.

It's a piece of cake to install Lookout on your phone. The process is quick, and once you do it, you'll be asked to establish an account with a username and password. If you begin with the basic version, you'll be prompted with the choice to upgrade right there and then.

Another neat feature that you'll like is an automatic virus scan every time you load a new app on your phone. For convenience, you can set the scan to run over your phone during specific times you deem appropriate, or you can initiate the scan manually. And here's what you'll really love about the automatic scan: it's fast and with it you can continue to use your phone as normal.

The malware detection rate is extremely high-up to 99 percent according to AV-Test. This rating is in the top echelon of its competitors.
Lookout also allows you to locate your phone if you have lost or misplaced it. Simply going to the company's website, lookout.com, will show you a map, which will point out exactly where your phone is.

Lookout Premium comes equipped with 2 GB of cloud storage. This is good news for all those people who like to take and send photos. This also makes it easier to store your call history and other data you wish to hang onto.

The Premium version, which is a recent upgrade, has a user-friendly interface and a charming look and feel. It comes with an activity feed, which shows you when you last scanned your phone and whether the most recent downloaded app on your phone is safe.

In all honesty, the $29.99 a year for the Premium version is a good buy, considering competitors' price routinely reach in the $40-$50 range.

The Bad

  • Basic version is limited
  • No profile creation
  • No blacklists

The free basic version is pretty bare bones. You're almost compelled to pay the $29.99/year and upgrade. If you are committed to paying nothing for your antivirus protection, you'll find better features on other basic plans.

Additionally, Lookout will not allow you to create a profile or to protect apps. There are also no Blacklists. The software does not provide for alerts when you change your SIM card. Lookout also tends to be a battery drainer.

The Bottom Line

Lookout simply gets it. They are ahead of the game. They were one of the first to offer protection to mobile devices, and they continue to impress with innovative ways to guard your phone against unwanted attacks from malware and viruses. While not perfect, Lookout is one of the top choices for mobile security. This is a definite recommend.
