The Good

  • Free to download
  • Compatible with many platforms
  • Great support

The latest version of FortiClient is absolutely free. This should be music to the ears of any users or potential user who is concerned about spending a lot of cash on an already annoying issue. This software is compatible for a wide range of platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X (Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or higher), iOS (iOS 5.1 or higher), and even for Android. The software is equally effective for all systems. Users will love the fact that the installation is simple for just about anyone. Even better, upon installation, FortiClient will begin scanning for active malware, and it does a tremendous job in doing this and identifying harmful issues. This pre-install scan can even be run in safe mode and will send Windows back to normal mode once the installation is finished. There are a few ways in which FortiClient excels. One of these is in Phishing protection, which is not always an evident feature in other software programs. With FortiClient comes a parental control system and blocks to dangerous websites, specifically phishing sites. Support is on-hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Plus, during regular business hours, support is enhanced. Either way, customers have access to help via phone and email. Other nice features with FortiClient are scheduled scans and automatic updates. This removes a great deal of headache from the customer. Instead of having to worry about scans starting in inconvenient places at inconvenient times, the user can decide for himself or herself when the scan should take place. Also, there is no need to worry about downloading updates and improvements to the software. FortiClient takes care of that for you. Lastly, FortiClient offers mobile platforms, which is welcome news to busy users who are on the go. The software is easily usable on your smartphone or tablet.

The Bad

  • Can be time consuming
  • Parental control
While the installation is easy from a step-by-step standpoint, it is time consuming, which can be irritating. Here's another issue to be aware of: while the software does a great job of blocking malicious websites (as already described), you have to be aware that new malicious sites are often undetected by the software. Another concern is that enabling the parental controls (while effective in and of themselves), turns off the anti-phishing and harmful URL blocking. So while you're protecting yourself against one unwanted intruder, you're opening yourself for more.

The Bottom Line

FortiClient is owned by a strong company, which offers excellent support. This means that when you use FortiClient, you're destined to be armed with all the tools you need to successfully use the product and find the results you desire. With its all-encompassing features list of web filtering, application firewall, antivirus, 2-factor application, vulnerability scan, WAN optimization, and more, FortiClient is without question an ideal choice in antivirus software. FortiClient is a top recommended solution for all your antivirus needs.

We use this at work and it integrates the VPN with the antivirus and single signon. I like it for the most part however sometimes the policies can be unintentionally restrictive.
