The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation was formed in 2014 by the merger of the Hazelden Foundation and the Betty Ford Center. With an extensive history of working together as individual organizations, the merger created an extensive network to help those struggling with addiction using the Twelve Step model. The organization runs the largest publishing house for recovery materials and an accredited graduate program on addiction studies.

The Good

  • Multiple Locations
  • Flexible Treatment Options
  • Post-Treatment Support

Multiple Locations

The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation has 17 locations in the United States for its clients. Different centers offer different programs for their clients, which include inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment, alumni support, family programs, and recovery housing. Centers can be found in California, Minnesota, New York City, Oregon, Florida, Colorado, Texas, Massachusetts, and Illinois.

Flexible Treatment Options

The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation offers several treatment options for individuals and family members affected by addiction. Some of the specialized treatments offered include inpatient, outpatient, special programs for women, adolescents, young adults, family members, opioid/heroin/pain pill addiction, older adult clients, health care professionals, legal professionals, LGBTQ, dual diagnosis mental health treatment, treatment for trauma and addiction, and a children's program.

Post-Treatment Support

Critical to long-term success for a treatment plan is support after finishing the program. The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation has a variety of support services designed to help its clients adjust to a clean and sober lifestyle. Some support services available include, mental health referrals, recovery coaching, recovery housing, and AA/NA meetings. All clients are given a comprehensive recovery plan at discharge so that they are able to maintain the progress which they have made in their treatment.

The Bad

  • Insurance Exclusions by Location
  • Travel Required for Specialized Programs

Insurance Exclusions by Location

As might be expected, there are some locations that do not accept all insurance plans. In fact, most locations accept some of the insurance plans. The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation works very diligently to assist as many people as possible to overcome addictions and offers prospective clients the option to coordinate care with a Care Navigator by phone.

Travel Required for Specialized Programs

For those with more specialized treatment needs, there may not be a program near them. This is not necessarily a new situation, but may add additional financial drain to an already expensive treatment program. Many feel that the benefits of quality treatment outweigh the inconvenience for travel and treatment.

The Bottom Line

There are many reasons that the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is considered a leader in addiction treatment. The organization has a significant record of success in helping individuals and families beat the disease of alcohol dependency. The foundation has programs specifically designed to meet the different needs of seniors, adolescents, healthcare/legal professionals, women, families, and LGBTQ. By tailoring treatment to address differences in differing populations, the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is one of the more diverse providers of alcohol addiction treatment in the United States.
