Delta Airlines is one of the largest American airlines and is headquartered at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It has one of the largest network hubs in the world and flies to over 325 destinations in 64 different countries. What began as Huff Daland Dusters, a crop dusting service, later became Delta Air Services with passenger flights starting in June 1929.
2013 saw Delta become the world's largest airline in terms of scheduled passengers, and the second largest in terms of revenue passenger-kilometers.
The company has worked extensively to make sure that customers have perks on most (if not all) planes in its fleet.
Passengers in the wide-bodied Boeing 766 are guaranteed to have wireless Internet available. Other models of planes may have Wi-Fi, but this feature has to be added to some planes (especially the fleet of Airbus and smaller narrow-bodied models).
Delta Sky Magazine, which is published by MSP Communications offers customers a wide variety of items to be perused in-flight.
Keep reading for pros and cons, plus Delta reviews from real customers.
There is a lot to like about Delta's SkyMiles rewards program. It is one of the only airlines in the industry to not let its customers' frequent flier miles expire. This perk for returning customers provides the potential for significant value over time.
Additional perks that come with being a SkyMiles member include flight upgrades, vacation packages, and other amenities.
There are no blackout dates for Delta's SkyMiles program.
Transparency is an important component of Delta's packages. Their travel insurance (offered through Allianz) is straightforward, easy-to-understand, and is perfect for nearly every passenger.
Another positive aspect of flying with Delta is that you are able to pay for a flight with sources of credit other than a credit card. Another payment option that could be used, for example, is Bill Me Later.
Delta has a wide array of destinations available for its clients. Their network of partners makes it easy for customers to get anywhere in the United States.
In some states, it was also possible to get to smaller cities through some of their partners. For example, we found that Moab, UT (a popular tourist spot) has scheduled service with SkyWest and Delta.
Another thing that separates Delta from their competition is their fleet of planes. Several Airbus and Boeing models are used in its wide-bodied fleet, and come with Wi-Fi, LCD displays (as of 2012), and AC power for laptops (on some planes).
Many narrow-bodied planes, mainly used for smaller connecting flights, also have Wi-Fi and other entertainment options available for customers.
The carrier has an extensive meal service for its flights, and any flight over six hours has a complimentary meal.
There is a wide variety of beverages available on flights. Alcoholic beverages include wine, beer, and some other liquor varieties that vary in price based upon the flight.
Also, all non-alcoholic beverages (including soda and coffee) are free.
A customer service experience with Delta is most likely to be positive. The website is filled with information that potential fliers may ask. It is simple to contact customer support via Domestic Flight Booking service number (800-221-1212), to ask specific questions about prices for purchasing a ticket. This is also a great place, along with their website, to get information about travel insurance.
As per Flightstats.com, Delta flights arrive on-time roughly 87% of the time. Compared to other top airlines, this is very competitive.
Let's face it; airlines can have a lot of problems when it comes to baggage. The largest complaints with Delta seems to stem from checked baggage fees. Some customers complained about the second checked baggage fee of $35. When customers take a carry-on that should be checked, some became offended at the complimentary free baggage check after check-in.
Going overseas, some customers had issues with the economy upgrade perks to their ticket. When the economy comfort perks had been "overbooked," customers were issued a refund, but often complained at not getting the experience that they had originally paid for.
Overall, these complaints were to be expected when flying in general, and most customers were pleased with their Delta experience.
I fly a lot and try to always fly Delta. They go where I need to go - better schedules and I prefer the perks of frequent flier miles here over other airlines. That said, upgrades at even a platinum level are really difficult.... it didn't used to be that way. Still, this is my go-to airline.
We've never had a bad experience flying with Delta. They also offer skymile rewards which is an added bonus. Their customer service has always been great! We will fly with them again.
We are a Delta hub in my city so we have the most options through Delta. It comes at a bit of a premium price though. There is nothing special about the experience so I typically look at discount airlines first, but Delta definitely has more flights and destinations from my city than any other airline.
I used Delta for the first time in a very long time. Must say I had a great experience. Great employees and a clean plane.
Amazing company, they provide great service and make each flyer feel comfortable.
Delta is a really good airline. Every time that I have ridden with them the customer experience and everything has been great
Delta airlines hooked me up with round trip tickets in exchange for cash back points on my credit card. Awesome trip.
Customer Service is fair, when calling about a delayed flight that was then cancelled they did everything they could to make accommodations, and offered vouchers. Desks at the airports customer service was sub par
Delta crew is s always courteous, planes clean and comfortable. Price is decent.
I love Delta Airlines! The best thing is the inflight entertainment. You don't have to worry about Wifi or having certain apps. the entertainment is built into the experience to keep my kids entertained with movies and games. And, I love that there are charging stations at each seat to charge our devices. It's the little things that make a company and I think the customer service and experience on Delta is top notch, especially when you're traveling with a family. We love to fly Delta with our kids, especially on their non-stop flights when you can take advantage of all the awesome in flight entertainment options.
Great communication, clean airplane, courteous staff. My company uses them for nearly every flight I take. Great service!
I love flying Delta! I recently flew on Delta and we experienced delays due to weather. Delta did everything possible to make our flying experience as convenient and comfortable as possible, especially given the circumstances. I will always choose to fly Delta.
Delta is easily the best airline out there domestically. Skymiles program is the best. Service is unmatched. Their planes are clean, have all the tech you can handle. You get what you pay for here.
I find when I fly with Delta with my wife and four children that is our trips seem to be less stressful. It makes for a much more enjoyable experience
Decent airline, but you have to pay for all the extras. Customer service is good, but some flight attendants aren't very friendly
I love flying with Delta! They have a wide variety of flight options and excellent customer service.
This is our go-to airline (mostly because there is a hub where we live). We're usually able to find competitively priced tickets and several times offered to where we are gong. Sometimes it just depends which plane you get on.... but, I've generally had good experiences with the in-flight entertainment.
I prefer Delta over most other major airlines because of how cheap it is. However, if you book a flight in the basic cabin, they will most likely put your seat all the way in the back by the bathrooms which is not all that comfortable.
As far as reliability goes, I've yet to experience an airline better than Delta. It's not the most inexpensive way to fly, but it is one of the better airlines.
We love flying with Delta as they offer more nonstop flights than most other airlines do. They also have comfortable seats with more entertainment options.
I have had great experiences with Delta Airlines. They always give you free drinks and snacks and have minimal interruptions. If they do have interruptions, delays, or cancellations it is most likely for your safety due to weather concerns or problems with the plane that don’t occur too often. I had good seats next to my sister and it was a rather pleasant flight. Sometimes I do have that occasionally child kicking the back of my seat which can get super annoying but other than that, it has been pretty good. Also, these scenarios are not really the airlines fault but it can take away from the pleasantness of your experience.
Delta has always been so helpful and reliable for all of my travel needs. They are always very helpful and nice.
My family and I have always flown with Delta. It's always been a great experience, and we all enjoy our flight. The staff is generally very friendly and willing to help make your flight comfortable.
I had a decent experience when flying with Delta. The people were friendly, but the service lacked help. I also flew my dogs with delta and they arrived really poorly.
I think that Delta Airlines is a very reliable airline, they try to help those who need it, and to help those who are confused, and they try to get things done fast, and efficently.
I always like flying with Delta because the flight attendants are always super nice, and finding and getting onto flights are easy to do. They also have TVs for your entertainment which is a plus!
Delta has always had great flights and great services on the flights. Love their food too
Although Delta is usually a bit more expensive, they are usually on time and pretty friendly. The last time I flew with them, I had my 7 month old with me. They were very accommodating and helpful throughout the whole process.
I flew to Rome, Italy and the flight was good but the transfer to the hotel was awful, I landed and had to wait over 1 hour and half to get to my hotel.
This is a really nice airline. It's very comfortable, but it's quite expensive. I guess it's worth it though, cause you just feel really relaxed and nice there. There's good entertainment, the flight attendants are amazing, and the plane looks quite nice too.
Delta is usually more expensive than the alternative flying options, but they make up for it in value. The seats are very comfortable and the in-flight accessories are of high quality. Although I do not fly Delta very often, it is always a great experience when I do.
Excellent service and communication regarding flight status. Experience with personnel has always been positive.
Delta is a discount airline that provides you with what you pay for and not much else. They fly to many locations within the US for a low rate but the flying experience is often quite unpleasant with little leg room and uncomfortable seats.
I have been flying a lot recently for medical school applications and Delta has been so accommodating and easy to work with.
They do have good service most of the time but they have too many ridiculous rules and are greedy!
Good service. Planes usually on time. Helpful if there are passenger special needs such as a wheelchair.
Excellent experience on several long-haul flights
My travel experiences have been very good. They kept us updated on any delays, made us comfortable with snacks.
The flight attendants are nice and they have the best airplanes I've been on in terms of cleanliness and activities available. They have a good selection of movies and games.
Delta does an excellent job of providing a quality experience for their customers.
Delta Airlines is our main company that we use when we fly places. They are reliable, the customer service is amazing, and we will never go back to Alaska Airlines ever again.
We have a Delta hub here so I fly Delta a lot. I like the service and they seem to be on time to depart and arrive earlier than I expected. I don't like how I have to pay for every little thing, but their service is professional and good. I will keep flying Delta.
I flew with them recently and had a really positive experience. I was comfortable and enjoyed it.
I fly Delta often for business and comparatively with other airlines I think it is tops. I don’t like the industry changes reducing servicing and tiering pricing to simply reserve and then assign a seat to fly.
I sadly have to say that most of my experiences with Delta haven't been the best. I've had them lose my luggage, and change my seat assignment that I paid for twice. What's sad is their customer service didn't make up for it either. I got my bag a day later, and was never compensated.
I don’t fly Delta often because I fly out of an airport that is not a hub for them. However, I have always had good experiences when I have flown on Delta. I have found their crews to be very friendly.
Have had several international flights with them. Always treated us super well and had great food (for an airplane). Would recommend!
Our family flies Delta whenever we can because it travels to all places all over the world. They are a reliable company and the seats have a tv in the back of them. Who wouldn't want that?!
I LOVE Delta. I've always had good experiences when I use this airline. There are always snacks and welcoming workers.
Delta Airlines has been a life saver for our family. Flying out of the country or during storms, Delta is reliable and NEVER cancels flights.
