Delta Airlines is one of the largest American airlines and is headquartered at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Delta has one of the largest network hubs in the world and flies to over 325 destinations in 64 different countries. They began as Huff Daland Dusters, a crop dusting service. Later, the company became Delta Air Services and started doing passenger flights in June 1929. In 2013, they became the world's largest airline in terms of scheduled passengers, and the second largest in terms of revenue passenger-kilometers. They have worked extensively to make sure that customers have perks on most (if not all) of the planes in its fleet. In its wide-bodied planes, the Boeing 766 are guaranteed to have wireless Internet available for its customers. Other models of planes may have Wi-Fi, but they had to add this feature to its planes (especially the fleet of Airbus and smaller narrow-bodied models). They also have the Delta Sky Magazine, which is published by MSP Communications. Their customers can purchase a wide variety of items from this magazine online, after perusing a wide selection of items while in flight.
- Rewards program
- Payment options
- On-time percentage
There is a lot to like about Delta’s SkyMiles rewards program. They claim to be one of the only airlines in the industry to not let its customers’ frequent flier miles expire, which provides their regular customers with the potential for significant value over time. There are additional perks that come with being a SkyMiles member, including flight upgrades, vacation packages, and other amenities. There are no blackout dates for Delta’s SkyMiles program.
Transparency is an important component of Delta’s packages. Their travel insurance (offered through Allianz) is straightforward, easy-to-understand, and is perfect for nearly every passenger.
Another positive aspect of flying with Delta is that you are able to pay for a flight with sources of credit other than a credit card. Another payment option that could be used, for example, is Bill Me Later.
Delta has a wide array of destinations available for its clients. Their network of partners makes it easy for customers to get anywhere in the United States. In some states, it was also possible to get to smaller cities through some of their partners. For example, we found that Moab, UT (a popular tourist spot) has scheduled service with SkyWest and Delta.
Another thing that separates Delta from their competition is their fleet of planes. They have several Airbus and Boeing models in its wide-bodied fleet, which have Wi-Fi, LCD displays (as of 2012), and AC power for laptops (on some planes). Many of their narrow-bodied planes, mainly used for smaller connecting flights, also have Wi-Fi and other entertainment options available for customers.
There is a wide variety of beverages available on flights. Alcoholic beverages include wine, beer, and some other liquor varieties that vary in price based upon the flight. They also have an extensive meal service for its flights, and any flight over six hours has a complimentary meal. Also, all non-alcoholic beverages (including soda and coffee) are free.
A customer service experience with Delta is most likely to be positive. Their website is filled with information that potential fliers may ask. It is simple to contact them through their Domestic Flight Booking service number (800-221-1212), and ask specific questions about prices for purchasing a ticket. This is also a great place, along with their website, to get information about travel insurance.
As per Flightstats.com, Delta flights arrive on-time roughly 87% of the time. Compared to other top airlines, this is very competitive.
- Baggage fees
- Upgrade issues
Let’s face it; airlines can have a lot of problems when it comes to baggage. The largest complaints with Delta seems to stem from their checked baggage fees. Some customers complained about the second checked baggage fee of $35. When some customers take a carry-on that should be checked, some customers became offended at the complimentary free baggage check after check-in.
Going overseas, some customers had issues with the economy upgrade perks to their ticket. When the economy comfort perks had been “overbooked,” customers were issued a refund, but often complained at not getting the experience that they had originally paid for.
Overall, these complaints were to be expected when flying in general, and most customers were pleased with their Delta experience.
Customers who are planning to fly with Delta Airlines would find it beneficial to research the companies checked baggage price system in advance. While the fees and prices associated with checked bags are standard, the policy is overwhelming as checked bag prices vary depending on the flight destination for each individual passenger. For example, if a customer is planning on flying within the United States, the first bag checked will be twenty-five dollars. A second bag will see a ten-dollar price increase and cost thirty-five dollars. Any more luggage will be subject to excessive luggage fees. However, if a passenger is traveling from the United States to South America or Asia, there is an allowance of two free checked bags. Most flight destinations and their coordinating checked baggage prices are neatly organized on the Delta website or customers can call in advance the customer support Delta Airlines staff for checked baggage prices for any flight. In addition, passengers flying on with Delta One First Business fares are allotted two free checked bags of a heavier weight to any destination worldwide. Members of the Delta rewards program are also entitled to the first checked bag free to any destination. As with most other airlines, the height and weight limit on standard checked bags is fifty pounds and under, as well sixty-two inches and smaller. As a benefit to customers, Delta Airlines provides an online option to more conveniently pay checked baggage prices by taking care of it before arriving at the airport. Any luggage exceeding either the number of checked bags allowed per ticket or the weight and height limitations are subject to addition excess baggage fees. These fees will be charged per extra item or size, and can be up to fifty dollars extra for the checked baggage price. However, each excess luggage item is individually evaluated and Delta Airline does not provide standard prices in advance.
Delta Airlines provides their customers with many options for travel insurance while flying with their aircrafts. First, the company allows for a twenty-four-hour grace period after purchasing a ticket with Delta Airlines to compare other airline prices or to simply change plans. If a cancellation is made within this twenty-four-hour period, customers will be granted a full refund including any fees associated with purchasing the airline ticket. If a trip cancellation is made after the twenty-four-hour grace period, a full refund might not be possible but Delta Airlines does generally allow for ticket rescheduling allowing a customer to not lose value on their ticket for up to a year after the original travel date. For baggage insurance, Delta Airlines promises to find lost bags within twenty-four-hours of landing and compensate for reasonable expenses that occur during that time. Both domestic flights as well as international flights follow this procedure so passengers can expect the same results no matter where their flight destination. In addition, if lost baggage cannot be located within twenty-one days it will be considered officially lost and Delta Airlines will reimburse for any fee that was charged to transport the bag.
In the event that a flight is delayed, evacuated or has issues for any reason, Delta Airline provides insurance that accommodations for travel will be made for each passenger aboard the flight. Whether it is additional ticket fares that need to be changed, or if a customer is in need of a place to stay to wait for a different flight, Delta Airlines will pay for a hotel of up to one hundred dollars as a courtesy for the inconvenience. Passengers flying who need special assistance or have any type of disability can be assured that the Delta Airlines staff makes assisting a top priority. Any accommodations can be made and are better served when the staff knows of the special requests in advance to boarding the flight. Additionally, Delta Airlines does provide their travelers with twenty-four-seven customer service anywhere in the world through, phone, email, or live chat.
Delta Airline has a rewards program called SkyMiles. This program allows members to sign up for free and collect miles or points by purchasing Delta airfare or by making purchases with one of the many partnering companies participating in the SkyMiles program through credit card use and other avenues. Reward points or miles can then be collected and used to purchase further Delta Airline airfare or to be put towards other gifts and merchandise available through Delta Airlines and the partnering companies participating in the program. Depending on which type of membership a customer is enrolled in through the rewards program the amount of miles per dollar spent can vary. Starting as low as five miles for every dollar, SkyMiles Diamond Medallion members as the highest ranking members can earn up to eleven miles per every dollar spent using their SkyMiles rewards. These earned miles can then be used to purchase future Delta Airlines airfare tickets at discounted rates. Miles and points earned through partners, which can be transferred into usable miles, do not have an expiration date and are not subject to any blackout dates through Delta operated flights. Additionally, members of the SkyMiles rewards program are allowed to transfer accrued points to other family members or friends for the use of their earned miles. However, all fees associated with mileage transfers are subject to change and must be paid by the membership holder. In comparison to other airline companies with rewards program, the Delta Airline SkyMiles program is a great benefit to their customers and allows for many different travel discounts. However, Delta Airline does limit the destinations of flights purchased with reward miles and provides a list of eligible destinations on the SkyMiles program website for members to search. Delta Airlines does their best at providing a variety of destinations and working with SkyMiles members to create the best experience while using their reward miles.
